Surviving the Summer Heat: 10 Ways to Keep Your Cool

in TN IRL on 07/21/16 by Kate 5 Comments

W ith a 99% chance that this year will be the hottest on record (thanks, global warming), you’re most likely melting right now in this summer’s blaze. It feels like every summer is just getting harder to endure (can you tell I’m from the South?), and it’s time to find some creative ways to stay cool. And I grew up in Florida, the land of humidity, hot pavement and sun, so you can take theses to the bank.

Freeze Towels

This is really a quick way to get cool and it’s a vice for me every summer. Grab some of those extra hand towels you never use and soak them in water, ring them out, roll em’ up and lay them in the freezer. Leave them for at least a few hours. You can also add some mint or even lavender to make it a even more relaxing experience. Treat yo’ self. Lay them on your face or wrap them around your feet to cool down ever quicker.

Buy something with Aloe vera

Aloe-Vera-1

This plant was always in my yard, usually for the purpose of treating burns, but it’s great at cooling you down. You can just spread it directly on your skin or even make aloe ice cubes. If you can’t get the plant, then buy lotion with aloe in it. It’s refreshing, soothing, and you’ll be wanting to apply it ever 10 minutes.

Be the cool kid on the block and invest in one of these

Yes, it is real. It’s a vest that you fill with ice cubes. You can buy it here on Amazon. You can buy anything on Amazon.

Freeze fruit for snacks

Fruit Grapes

Frozen grapes are my favorite, but literally any frozen fruit gives you a cool boost. Or freeze the fruit in ice cubes trays and give your water a nice refreshing, decorative twist.

Put your sheets in the fridge about 30 minutes before you go to bed.

This is a good idea for those who don’t mind making and remaking their beds. So, unfortunately, I’m out. But I do hear to it keeps you cool and allows you to sleep better in the heat. Just shove those leftovers over and pop them in.

No A/C? Make a frozen fan

You can fill a big bowl with ice and put it in front of a fan, this allows cool air to circulate all around the room. If this can cool down my old dorm room in the dead of August, it can cool down anything. You can also use a frozen towel and place it in front of the fan. It works the same way.

Leave your sweat be

Yeah, gross, I know. But it really does cool you down. That is the biological function after all (thanks, evolution). So, don’t wipe the sweat off, but let it absorb into your skin. You might feel nasty, but you will be cooler.

Buy Peppermint Cooling Spray

Peppermint is the most cooling and refreshing thing ever. It feels great when you mist it on your overheated skin. Buy a small portable bottle so you can use it on the go or if you’re feeling in a DIY kind of mood, here are instructions to make your own here. Besides its cooling sensation, it is known to help relax and ease tension headaches and muscular aches. So, there’s a plus.

And finally, just remember…

Eventually.

How are you cooling down this summer?
