Because the man stood for 14+ hours with no bathroom breaks, no food, and no sitting breaks, this man deserves the #1 spot. Because being the Senator from the State where Sandy Hook happened, it means all the much more. Because he had the balls to take the national stage and drag our Senate into the spotlight for their lack of action, Chris Murphy is our #1 Senate Filibuster Woke Bae!

Cory Booker was preaching and changing hearts and minds and making everyone LOVE him on social media. So essentially you could call Cory a 2016 JESUS. Pretty much. I am worshipping at the church of Senator Cory Booker and will be quoting him forever. One of Cory’s memorable moments from last night:
“Love sees the truth of who we are, that we each have value, we have worth, we each have merit, that we need each other, that we’re interwoven in each other’s destiny, that if there’s injustice is effects me and I have to work to correct that… We’re here because of this conspiracy of love.”

When Senator Tammy Baldwin brought out of the poster board with the 50 people killed in Orlando and began to talk about each victim and their lives, I stood up and slow clapped from my couch. Even as she nearly butchered each name, I couldn’t help but want to hug her for bringing the feels to the filibuster. Tammy is also the first openly gay Senator… EVER.

4. Other Senate Democrats who helped #HoldtheFloor
Chris Murphy could NOT have done the Filibuster by himself unless he wanted to fully assume the mantle of Jefferson Smith from Mr Smith Goes To Washington. A Filibuster takes a village and a team. Many Senate Democrats took to the floor to “ask questions” of Chris Murphy which essentially turned into passionate speeches and personal stories of gun violence from each Senator’s respective home state. The Senators also helped Senator Murphy play within the rules of a Filibuster by asking him repeatedly if they could ask a question yet not take the floor. Twitter even said that Senator Cory Booker stood the entire Filibuster in solidarity with Senator Chris Murphy. Many people online shared the sentiment but I’ve also never felt proud of a Senator or any congressperson until last night. Bravo.

From Senators to The Brady Campaign to every day Tweeters, Twitter kept the filibuster trending for hours taking up more than half of the Trending Topics at times and even making it INTO the Filibuster itself, being mentioned in several questions/speeches. If the GOP was not listening to it’s constituents before, they better be NOW.

Woke Baes or not, there’s still more work to be done. The Feinstein Bill will go to a vote but PLEASE if you are ready for commonsense laws, if you won’t want terrorists or domestic abusers to have EASY access to assault style rifles, CALL YOU SENATORS! The Brady Campaign set up an amazing and easy way to do it. Follow the directions below and leave a message and remind your Senators they represent US.
Ok, ok I say some of this is a joking manner and mostly because our site is not a buttoned up place and because we have to laugh occasionally or we’ll cry, especially following the Orlando tragedy at Pulse Nightclub and the continued epidemic of senseless gun violence and hate due to loop holes in our gun laws. We have called these people Woke Baes because this is the internet, but your voice is important. If you’re like the majority of Americans and want commonsense gun laws, call your Senators, Representatives and local councils to express your support of the Senate and the Feinstein bill.
