Who didn’t want to be a mermaid after seeing this movie? I know I totally wished that my name was Madison (this movie is the reason that Madison even became a popular girl name), and I still think about the scene where she eats the lobster whole every time I see a tank full of them in a restaurant or grocery store. My sister and I picked this movie out all the time when we would go to the movie rental place (remember those?) and watched it over and over, as little kids are wont to do. I’m kind of tempted to stop writing this post for a while and watch it again right now. It was the first real hit for both Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard, who have gone on to do one or two more small projects I think.
Bottom line, it’s good stuff. So when I read a recent interview with producer Brian Grazer where he discussed wanting to remake the film, my first reaction was less than enthusiastic. Do they have to remake everything? However, I didn’t want to be like one of those a-holes who are losing their minds over the new Ghostbusters, so I decided to think about it for a bit. If I don’t like the way it looks, I don’t have to go see it, it’s as simple as that. Plus, it sounds like they want to put a twist on this version.
He went on to reveal that the point of view he was talking about was the mermaid. That’s interesting, but I’m still dubious. On the other hand, if the cast starts to come together with people that I’m excited about I could to a complete 180 on this. I have my doubts now, but don’t be too shocked if some time down the road you see a post from me about how I can not wait for the Splash remake. Opinions can change, so I’m going to stay open minded about this mermaid rom-com like a mature adult.
Seriously though, I’m obsessed with it now, how fantastic is Splash?! Tom Hanks is a damn national treasure. This Jimmy Kimmel skit is still one of my favorite things (and has Ron Howard too, so it’s perfect!)
