The Book that Shonda Wrote

in Life on 06/02/16 by Guest Contributor 2 Comments

Hi, my name is Katelin and I’m a card carrying member of the House of Shonda Rhimes. I also pray at the Church of Shonda, I read the Book of Shonda (no really, there’s an actual book) and I listen to the Music of Shonda.

In short, Shonda Rhimes owns my soul.

And I don’t care who knows it.

I have been watching Grey’s Anatomy since season two, Scandal since season two and How to Get Away With Murder from the get go. I finally realized after two solid shows that I should just start, watch and accept that I will love it.

And I will binge it. And I will re-watch it. And I won’t be able to explain my love and adoration of Shonda and her shows to anyone because it makes no sense.

Shonda Rhimes has given me characters that spoke to my soul (Cristina Yang is my hero). She’s given me story lines that have made me laugh hysterically and cry uncontrollably. This woman is a mad scientist of my emotions.

And because taking over my television wasn’t enough Shonda went and wrote a book (Year of Yes) that I had to read. And it was a really good book. It was a book that made me love her television shows more (seriously, it all comes back to TV). She shared bits of her life and her story that no one knew. She shared personal struggles of parenthood, of being a working woman, of being a black woman, of losing weight and ultimately of doing things that scared her. Her whole story revolved around her saying YES.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the center of it all, a conversation Shonda had with her sister. It was Thanksgiving and Shonda was telling her sister about this amazing event she was invited to attend. Her sister asked her if she planned on going and she thought about it a split second before saying “No, of course not.” And then her sister replied “You never say yes to anything.” Those six little words changed her life completely. She realized she was stuck and wasn’t doing anything out of her bubble. And that little conversation made her want to finally say yes.

And it made me want to say YES.

YES to more Shonda shows. YES to dancing it out. YES to being emotionally unstable while watching more Shonda shows.
YES my House of Shonda card will be around a little while longer.

Katelin’s Current Obsessions:
Red wine. Peanut butter M&Ms. Words with Friends. Anything British (especially Charlie Hunnam). Road trips. Seeing how many days she can go without wearing actual pants. Drinking too much coffee on a daily basis. Country music.Bloodline. Only buying what’s on her shopping list at Target (it never happens, but she’s obsessed with the potential that it might).
 .
Katelin loves all things pop culture and thinks Keanu Reeves is a national treasure. Kevin Costner laughed at her once. She can usually be found binge watching TV shows or reading a YA book when her son is napping. Her life motto is “WWTTD – What would Tami Taylor do?” Follow @Katelin
