Director Kenneth Branagh clearly knew what he was doing when he put Lily and Richard together, because he’s doing it again for the play he’s directing this summer. From May 12th to August 13th, Romeo and Juliet will run in London. We all know that the ending of this one isn’t going to be quite as pollyanna as Cinderella, but everything else should be fabulous. Even the poster is beautiful.
My friend and I were so pumped about this production that when it was first announced we wanted to plan a trip to England while it was running to be able to see it. Unfortunately, a trip to London costs more than the budget of about $0.00 that we had available to us for a European vacation. Such is life. Luckily for those of us who don’t live in London and can’t get there, Ken has taken pity on us. On July 7th, Romeo and Juliet is going to screen in theaters across the world. Lorena and I saw the screening of Coriolanus when Tom Hiddleston was in it a few years ago, and it was great. Giving people the opportunity to see a play that they would otherwise never have a chance to see is never a bad thing as far as I’m concerned. It looks like tickets are on sale already for theaters in England, but I haven’t yet been able to find a list of the theaters where R&J will be showing in the United States, but I’ll be keeping an eye out. In the meantime, promotional material is being released and it’s good stuff.
That almost makes you forget that in the play they’re like fourteen years old.
Lily and Richard made an appearance on the Graham Norton Show, (the episodes usually air in the US a bit behind and will probably air in about a week) but sadly there are only a few clips on Youtube. This one isn’t about the play at all, and is instead about the jock strap that Richard Madden had to wear in Cinderella. It’s entertaining nonetheless. Hopefully Ken has more comfortable costumes in mind for his actors in Romeo and Juliet.
