Gilmore Girls is one of my all-time favorite shows. I watched it with my college roommates, my mom and sister when I was home on vacations, and (by the end) talked about it with my with my middle school English students every week once I was an adult with a job. It’s a show that saw me through the transition from the last bit of childhood into adulthood. No matter whether I was writing a paper or planning my wedding, I had a weekly date with Lorelai and Rory.
So I already know that my expectations–along with every other mega-fan of this show–are already wildly out of control. But let’s talk about them anyway. Here’s what I want to see in these six hours I get to re-visit Stars Hollow, Connecticut:
The Gilmore Girls Fantasies We Simultaneously Loved and Hated
Eight years later, I still want Lorelai and Rory to eat like women on a fast-track to type-2 diabetes and still look like emaciated Hollywood actresses.
I want Stars Hollow to be the same idyllic small town where everyone knows everyone else and they haven’t been over-run with a Starbucks on every corner while everyone looks down at their iPhones/Fitbits.
Updates on All Our Favorite Couples
In 2007, GG ended with Luke and Lorelai sharing a kiss. Did they get married? Do they have a little rugrat or two running around? Has Luke given up wearing baseball caps, or does he now refuse to take them off–ever–even when he and Lorelai are getting it on?
If Rory were your real life friend (and not a character on a TV show), she’d either be single (married to her job, and happy to be so!), with someone who has equally prestigious career goals (and could handle being half of a high-power couple), or (let’s face it) divorced from someone who couldn’t accept that she cared more about her career than helping him with his. It’s unlikely she’d get back together with her college boyfriend, whose proposal she spurned. And other than occasionally stalking her high school ex-boyfriends on social media , they wouldn’t be a blip on her radar. But since this the fantasy-land of a TV reunion show, she’s going to end up with Logan, Jess, or Dean (because all three boys are coming back!). My vote: Logan. But I’d be fine with Jess. Honestly, I don’t know why Dean is even coming back. He was a great first boyfriend, but she shouldn’t end up with him.
Did Lane and Zach’s marriage survive? They got married and had babies really young. Are they still together? How cute are their kids? Has Hep Alien (their band, for those of you who don’t speak Gilmore fluently) gotten a record deal? Made some money on the Indie scene? Broken up years ago?
What happened to Paris and Doyle? Do they have a nerd baby or two? (Can you IMAGINE Paris as a mother???) Is Paris a doctor and horrifying cancer patients and their families with her appalling bedside manner? What’s Doyle up to now?
How Will the Absence of a Few Crucial Characters Be Explained
Melissa McCarthy (Sookie) isn’t coming back. She claimed she wasn’t invited, but everyone from ASP to every article I’ve read has mentioned that McCarthy is awfully busy. She’s the headliner of her own network show, has been nominated for an Oscar, and is, um, probably making more money than everyone other Gilmore alum combined. So the big question is: how will Sookie’s absence be explained?
The other–sadder–absence will be Edward Hermann’s (Richard). If I were writing the reunion episodes, I would starting with everyone at Richard’s funeral. Any other thoughts on how ASP and team might write it into the show?
Which Minor Character Will Pull Something Totally Crazy Pants?
I mean, will Kirk want to propose to Lulu by skywriting, but try to fly the plane himself and crash it? Will Taylor actually walk around Stars Hollow with a ruler and measure everyone’s grass length? Will Miss Patty have a new husband? Will Michel kill a Dragonfly Inn guest and try to get Lorelai to help him hide the body? I can’t wait to see!
Are We Going to Get a 2-for-1???
Sutton Foster (the star of ABC Family and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s show Bunheads) is coming to Stars Hollow. Have network execs and copyright lawyers waded through all the legal garbage that would allow us to get an ending to TWO shows? (Oh please! Please! Please!) Or is Sutton Foster going to be written in as Lorelai’s long-lost half sister no one knew anything about? (I’m the 47,593th person to mention it, but Sutton Foster and Lauren Graham look a LOT alike!)
So tell me, what do you want to see in the reunion? Are you all as crazy excited as I am? Let’s chat!
