5 Reasons Why Blacks Sails Is The Best Show On TV Right Now:
1. The Production Value Is Insane
Ever since Season 2, where they really found their footing, watching Black Sails is like watching a two hour blockbuster movie crammed into a premium channel show. If you saw last week’s episode where they navigate the Walrus through a Tempest than you know what I’m talking about, they brought in jet engines to create 50 mile an hour wind, built a ship set that tilts 30 degrees and then threw the whole thing in the water.
2. THE DRAMA… THE FEELS
Source
After last week’s episode titled XX. (or The Storm, in the video above), Starz needs to forget the Scottish folk (we love you Scottish folks) and focus their efforts on nominating the cast from Black Sails. Toby Stephens (The Countess Dowager’s son for those not in the know) absolutely murdered Season Two as we learned the background of who Capt. Flint is and why he ended up as one of the most dreaded pirates in Nassau. Then add in Luke Arnold as John Silver and Richard Wright Firth’s scene from last week, plus ALL of the strong female characters and most namely Jessica Parker Kennedy who from Season One has portrayed some of the most grisly and compelling work on the show, everyone deserves an award.
3. All the Fantastic Beards and Facial Hair
You can’t have a show about pirates without amazing facial hair. Toby Schmitz who plays Jack Rackham has brought it every episode in his peacock-like portrayal of the pirate who just wants to be remembered but can’t really get anyone on his side. His facial hair changed every episode, sometimes WITHIN the episode and was topped with some of the craziest looks, like rudimentary “sunglasses.” If you like beards and long, flowing locks, than this show is for you. And if you’re more like me and prefer the cleaner look, there’s always Billy Bones. Yes. please.
4. They Won a GLAAD Award!
With all the talk of diversity in entertainment these days, it’s refreshing to turn on Black Sails and see MULTIPLE women and men of all skin tones playing gay and straight in dignified and compelling ways. It’s not hard Hollywood, not every interesting story took place in a white man’s life, let alone in the Caribbean. Kudos to the show for casting that represents more than what we’re used to and for characters that live life on their own terms and aren’t afraid to defend it.
5. Blackbeard is an old Sage
Ray Stevenson joined this season of Black Sails as Edward Teach or as we know him from legends, Blackbeard! I don’t know about you guys but everything I’ve ever known about Blackbeard portrayed him as a ferocious, scary pirate. Ray Stevenson has, for the first two episodes at least, portrayed him as quick the sage, going on for several lines of what can only be likened to pirate poetry. I’m sure this furry, grandfather act won’t last the entire season but it’s been funny to see him as quite the opposite of what history has made him to be.
And the 6th and unofficial reason you should be watching Black Sails is: I don’t like bad TV! I swear, ok maybe I watch Big Brother in the summer, but other than that my record is spotless and you can trust me. WATCH THIS so we can talk about it, plus you gotta use that Starz subscription for something while Outlander is on hiatus.
Black Sails is on STARZ Saturday nights at 10PM.
