We’re in the midst of the Sundance Film Festival right now, and there is already all kinds of buzz about the films this year. We may even end up talking about some of them here on That’s Normal. Last year at this time one of the movies at Sundance that people were talking about was The Bronze. I wrote something about it a while back when a few stills were released. Basically, the movie is about former Olympians, and the one scene everyone lost their minds over was a comically insane gymnastic sex scene between the stars Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) and Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Martian, my dreams). I even broke out my photo editing skills and made this beauty.
When I first wrote my post, the movie was supposed to come out in July of 2015. Then there were some issues with the studio that had bought the movie at Sundance. Issues like going bankrupt. So several films were left in limbo and had to be scooped up by other studios. Sony Pictures Classics bought The Bronze, and it seems like everything is back on track, because we actually have a trailer! It dropped a little bit ago and didn’t ping on my radar until very recently (hence my need to catch up on things), so I gave it a look.
My initial thoughts: Does this movie look like it’s something that I would normally enjoy? Not really. It’s just not my sense of humor. It looks like it could have its moments, but as a whole…not so much. On the other hand, does this look like a movie that I would have a good time seeing with a friend after we’ve had a questionable amount of margaritas at dinner? Potentially. Have you seen Jupiter Ascending? It is a hot mess, and my friend and I had a total blast watching it. I think it’s possible that The Bronze could be similar. It seems like Thomas Middleditch’s character is going to be the only likable one, and to enjoy watching this movie it’ll be necessary to get on board with how much you hate everyone else. Which is doable. Just look at them.
There is such a “we’re the absolute worst” vibe coming off of this picture. We’ll have to see how everything comes together. The only thing that genuinely surprises me is that the trailer didn’t even hint at a sex scene. It’s a red band trailer after all, why not go for it? If that’s going to be the big selling point of your movie, that needs to be made apparent. Yes, it seems ridiculous for that to be the draw, but I doubt at the end of the day the studio is going to care what gets butts in seats. The Bronze with Sebastian Stan is due out March 11th, for real this time.
What’s your favorite “this is not good, but it’s also so good” movie? Oh, and feel free to share your fave Sebastian Stan pics in the comment!
