Back in November I hopped on a plane for a quick trip to New Mexico (like seriously quick, I was only there for 16 hours) to visit the set of an exciting new film called The Space Between Us, starring Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson. Today, That’s Normal has an exclusive sneak peak from the film due to hit cinemas this coming July.
The Space Between Us is the story of a young man named Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield), the first human to be born on Mars. Move over Matt Damon, we’ve got a new Martian in town. His mother, an astronaut on the first mission to colonize Mars, discovers shortly after they start their journey to the Red Planet that she is pregnant, due to complications in childbirth she dies taking with her the secret of who Gardner’s father is. When Gardner turns sixteen he begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa (Britt Robertson) while searching for information about his father online. Gardner grows determined to take the journey to earth to find his father, meet Tulsa and to find where he belongs in the universe.
On Set
Our day on set was focused a lot on Tulsa’s story including the first face to face meeting between to two lead characters. Filmed at Highland High School in Albuquerque, a high school that already has a claim to fame as Beavis and Butthead’s High school, (seriously, look it up). While we were outside watching the filming, school was actually in session. It was impossible to separate which kids were extras and which were actually in the middle of their school day. More on my set visit later!
While the The Space Between Us is an original screenplay, not based on a book, the movie reminded me of some of the most popular young adult novels out there. Plus let’s face it, Mars is so hot right now, and travel to Mars is closer than most of us know. With a focus on self discovery, first loves, and a back story that isn’t quite as far fetched as it may seem, this film is going to be epic!
The Space Between Us will be in theaters July 29th.
Keep an eye out for continuing coverage of The Space Between Us in the coming months including my time on set and of course, more about the movie!
