Listen up, ladies. We should all be watching Undateable on NBC.
You have no reason not to. It airs Friday nights at 8 PM, and you know the cool kids don’t go out until 9:30 or 10, so watch Undateable while you’re pre-gaming with a dry rosé and waiting for that OPI I’m Not Really A Waitress to dry on your toes.
This show is funny, y’all. When Parks & Rec went to join Lil Sebastian in comedy heaven, I was left without a sitcom to watch. And when you are in the middle of a semi-nasty (smasty) divorce, baby girl needs a sitcom. Some days, laughing > Ativan. Some days.
This show made me laugh. It made me, like, laugh out loud. I think there is an acronym for that but I’m blanking.
Fun fact: Lotta Butts founding editor is Anna Wintour
Basic premise: Justin (Brett Morin) is a guy who owns a dive bar in Detroit. Justin loves the comfort of flat-front Dockers. Justin’s roommate/BeFri is Danny (Chris D’Elia). Danny’s favorite word is smarm and enjoys showing off his chest hair.
The bar crew includes a gay British bartender (David Fynn), a regular guy-cum-Greek chorus (Ron Funches), a blonde waitress who likes denim miniskirts (Bridgit Mendler), a wine rep with a drinking problem (Bianca Kajlich), and a pervy rando (Rick Glassman). In other words, #SquadGoals.
“How was it I had a penis in each hand last night and yet I’m still not the gayest person in this bar?”
So why watch Undateable? Besides it being guffaw-inducing?
Detroit!
This is the one show on NBC not set in Chicago (But real talk, Chicago Gyno is pretty amazing).
This Detroit bar struggles because their tap system sucks.
Culture!
Undateable is LIVE. It’s like SNL, but with 100% less Human Circus Peanut Donald Trump.
Seeing a show air live is like going to a theater performance – while wearing Old Navy yoga pants, no bra, and skidless hospital socks. But instead of seeing the work of Chekov, you are seeing the work of Adam Sztykiel. Due Date > Uncle Vanya.
And because it’s live, you occasionally get to see the actors break character. Some people hate when actors break, giggling at the other actors’ jokes and improvisations. Not me. I love breaking. The best part of the “Matt Foley/Van Down by the River” sketch on SNL? Christina Applegate and David Spade breaking on the couch.
Ron Funches
Go and watch Ron Funches explain to you the struggles of Black Cosplay. (We’ll wait).

That guy is on this show. Enough said.
It’s self aware.
The writers and actors get it. Friday night TV is a hard sell. Breaking the 4th wall, Shelly (Funches) acknowledges the studio audience and says, “Whatever it is they watching, they seem to be enjoying it. They should probably tell some friends.” So I’m telling you guys – my TN friends. WATCH THIS SHOW.
Chris D’elia’s eyebrows
They are the most expressive thing on TV. And if I take my glasses off, I can convince myself it’s really my Spanish tennis boo Feliciano Lopez up there showing off his chest hair.
Live musical guests
Each week features a different, fresh musical guest. This season, Undateable has rocked out with Nico & Vinz, Kodaline, and Saint Motel. These are good bands. No Hotline Bling bullshit.
Saint Motel has HORNS!
Watch Undateable. This is an ultimatum. The show is funny. I also heard a rumor that Sam Heughan, T Hiddy, and that dude from Arrow love it. Friday nights. 8 PM. NBC (Not a Bar in Chicago).
