Sure, I watch The Walking Dead every Sunday Night with my husband. I enjoy it, great show, and who doesn’t love a zombie apocalypse, right? And I’m one of the only few who is still hanging on with Nashville. For some reason I can’t quit that dramatic nightmare. But that is ALL I’ve got going on my weekly TV-watching schedule.
I remember the days when I had to keep a list of the shows I was into because if I didn’t I was going to forget to watch something important (Oh, yeah, I’ve also never paid ONCE for DVR, so I literally had a written-down list.) There was Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Revenge, The Mindy Project, Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Wife, New Girl, NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles (yep, I’m that girl), and Hart of Dixie. I think. I lost my list.
But then Nick and Jess got together and New Girl got terrible. Revenge’s crazy storylines got too unbelievable (and APPARENTLY IT IS OFF AIR?? WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN? HOW DID IT END?) Mindy and Danny hooked up, Gossip Girl ended 🙁 Vampire Diaries is laughable, NCIS- well that was ALWAYS Terrible. And Hart of Dixie… I honestly just forgot to keep watching it, and I could go on and on. TV was just not interesting enough to keep me.
That’s not to say I haven’t found TV shows to enjoy in the past few years. I binged watched Sense8 because I felt left out of all our Sense8 Debates. I watched and loved Poldark after all you people wouldn’t shut up about it, and this summer I FINALLY watched all 6 seasons of Friday Night Lights.
And all isn’t hopeless: Writing this post has made me remember Downton Abbey is back in the UK and I can start watching it before it airs here (psst Zenmate people. Install the chrome extension) And someone emailed to tell us The Last Kingdom is amazing and needs TN coverage (anyone watching it yet?) Jessica Jones looks pretty spectacular and one of these days maybe just MAYBE I’ll watch past episode 1 of Game of Thrones.
I KNOW there is great TV I haven’t watched. I haven’t seen even one episode of Mad Men. I’ve never watched LOST. I haven’t watched The Wire, The Sopranos or Breaking Bad. But those take committment guys. They eat up your LIFE. When my husband Binged watched LOST a few years ago (and it was a binge) I didn’t see him or talk to him for 6 weeks. And he was a MESS when it was over. I enjoy TV that makes you think and feel etc. etc. But every night? For weeks on end? Give me a little Chuck and Blair drama for 1 hour a week you guys! That’s all I’m asking for.
Are my days of having a show to watch every night over? Is it all Netflix binges and catching up on past shows for me? I’d give anything to have a teeny bopper drama like Gossip Girl or The OC to distract me a night or two a week again.
Am I crazy or is TV just not as good anymore?
PS: I thought of a few exceptions. The Royals is back in 2 weeks; I watched 2 seasons of Playing House on USA this summer (SO GOOD) and Outlander. Obviously.
