I would like to think that the above lyric is a song from The Civil Wars’ makeup record. But, sadly, it’s not. And that leads me to make this announcement:You gotta go and get angry at all of my honesty
You know I try but I don’t do too well with apologies
I hope I don’t run out of time, can someone call a referee?
My name is Julie and I confess that I like Justin Bieber’s new song. God help me.
As long as I’m confessing, let’s not stop there: the Biebs may not be the only one who has received my seal of musical approval and a purchase from iTunes that I eventually hide in a playlist entitled, “Mediation Music.” (You wouldn’t even believe what’s in my baroque music list.)
Here are just a few of my new not-so-guilty pleasure songs.
Justin Bieber’s Sorry
Okay, I’ll admit it: these lyrics are completely syrup and should have a warning that accompanies them that they could cause douchebagness. But picture the 21 year old you were and when you had your own man-child with overprocessed hair telling you, “I’m not just trying to get you back on me.” That’s the stuff junior high love notes are made of minus the Drakkar Noir scented paper.
One Direction’s Perfect
Sure, my bid for Zayn’s replacement was rejected:
One Direction decided that teenage girls needed to scream their feelings just a little bit more and released Made in the A.M. this past week. Amid songs about searching for love, losing love, getting love back was this little gem:
Why do I love this song so much? One, Harry Styles is my next hair goal. Two, the not-so-veiled Taylor Swift reference, which proved you could call out TSwizzle and not die from it.
Hailee Steinfeld’s Love Myself
As the newest member of both the Barden Bellas and Taylor Swift’s empire Squad, Hailee Steinfeld proved she could hold her own amid sick-as-shit a capella rifts and a vengeful Selena Gomez.
So it was no surprise she decided, like any other teen actress, to release her own music. What did surprise me was how much I liked it.
“Love Myself” is the anthem I wished I had when I was a teen: a reminder that the most essential relationship is the one you have with the person you see everyday in the mirror.
Gonna love myself, no, I don’t need anybody else
(Hey)
Gonna love myself, no, I don’t need anybody else
(I love me)
Can’t help myself, no, I don’t need anybody else
Anytime, day or night
(I love me)
And while the media obsessed over the song’s self-sexual innuendos, it took an 18 year old girl to be the biggest adult in the room:
“I think for me the song just has a really strong self-empowerment message, and whether you take that as something physical or not, it basically means the same thing … It’s about being able to provide for yourself and knowing how much power there is in that.”
Rock on, Hailee. You could join my a capella squad anytime.
