- It’s now November.
- It’s been three months since our last Boozy Book Club hangout.
- So… it’s time for a new hangout.
- Because it’s freaking NOVEMBER already.
- We also picked new books to read this month.
- This month. The new one we are currently in. November.
- What the hell, calendar? NOVEMBER???
I’m somehow not prepared for the passage of time, unless it is hurtling me straight towards a European vacation or the only season of the year that matters (SUMMER), because November just smacked me in the face with its reality. But here we are, creeping slowly toward the long, slow slog that is the holiday season. But to keep us from being too depressed that we have soggy Vans and closet-space-consuming jackets to keep track of, we have good news.
IT’S TIME FOR A NEW BOOZY BOOK CLUB HANGOUT!
That’s right … in case you forgot or never knew, Boozy Book Club lives on our Goodreads Group or on the occassional twitter read along. But every three months, we hop in Hangouts and discuss one of our books live. If you’d like to join in, just watch our twitter feed for a link and use the hashtag, #TNBookClub to chat with us during the show.
This hangout’s main discussion will be about Uprooted by Naomi Novik for one pretty amazing reason. Uprooted was our optional book for September, reading along with major hit The Martian. But out of the six books we’ve read since August, it was our most talked about, and one of our book clubbers’ favorites. We haven’t even reviewed it on the site yet because we just have LOTS to say. So we are going to say it live on the internet for posterity. Join us!
Boozy Book Club Hangout is Tuesday, Nov 10 at 10pm EST
And now …
Our Boozy Book Club November Books
Menagerie by Rachel Vincent has been hailed recently as a new era in urban fantasy. It’s been mistakenly shelved as Young Adult, but I’m assured it’s not. In fact (and don’t let this dissuade you from reading) I’m pretty sure it has zero romance in it! GASP … THEREIN LIES THE TRUE HORROR. No swoony boys and lots of stomach curdling events? Yep. It is dark, disturbing, twisty and decadent. Here’s the official summary:
When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger’s Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah in her black swan burlesque costume is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she’s forced to “perform” in town after town.
But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other “attractions”—mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies—are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she’ll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.
Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.
Interested yet? Me too!
Our optional book this month is Mandy McGinnis’ A Madness So Discreet. We’re really pushing the old timey abuse laden settings this month. Madness is set in an insane asylum in the late 19th century, and reads like a YA mystery thriller.
Grace Mae knows madness.
She keeps it locked away, along with her voice, trapped deep inside a brilliant mind that cannot forget horrific family secrets. Those secrets, along with the bulge in her belly, land her in a Boston insane asylum.
When her voice returns in a burst of violence, Grace is banished to the dark cellars, where her mind is discovered by a visiting doctor who dabbles in the new study of criminal psychology. With her keen eyes and sharp memory, Grace will make the perfect assistant at crime scenes. Escaping from Boston to the safety of an ethical Ohio asylum, Grace finds friendship and hope, hints of a life she should have had. But gruesome nights bring Grace and the doctor into the circle of a killer who stalks young women. Grace, continuing to operate under the cloak of madness, must hunt a murderer while she confronts the demons in her own past.
In this beautifully twisted historical thriller, Mindy McGinnis, acclaimed author of Not a Drop to Drink and In a Handful of Dust, explores the fine line between sanity and insanity, good and evil—and the madness that exists in all of us.
OH SO MUCH HORRIBLENESS THIS NOVEMBER … just like the month. Horrible. Can’t wait.
