The school term has once again started and there’s a new intake of children with a range of wonderful names. The UK is becoming more and more diverse when choosing names with the likes of Michael, John, and Robert dropping off the radar for the likes of Jacob, Theon, and even Tyrion – yes last year 17 parents named their sons after the Game of Thrones character.
It’s become a fascination, names like Arya are becoming more and more popular, and with major TV shows taking over are lives that’s only going to increase. We’re continually being influenced by what we see, and the trend setters of this world.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are likely to set a new baby name trend when their baby boy is born in just a few weeks’ time, with the pair seen as one of the hottest celebrity couple’s on the planet. That’s in addition to David and Victoria Beckham of course, who are two of the most recognisable people on the planet.
When Victoria gave birth to Harper in 2011, the UK saw a massive rise in parents naming their daughters after the newest member of the Beckham family. The name rocketed to the 89th most popular name in 2014, that’s up 3,636 places over the period of a decade.
But what are we seeing topping the lists today?
Well unsurprisingly, there are a few enjoying the high life in popular culture right now.
For the boys, Harry makes the top three popular baby names according to Ladbrokes, with of course Harry Styles perhaps being a deciding factor behind that. No surprises Zayn doesn’t make the list. Jacob also makes the list, with close associations to the Twilight phenomenon which dominated the early parts of the decade.
Popular culture also has its say with girls’ names too. Isla makes the top three with the actress Isla Fisher partly influencing the rise in the name, whilst Lily has been a popular choice amongst celebrity children over the last few years.
Either way, we’re being more and more influenced by popular culture when choosing baby names. I just can’t wait until my little Walter White is born…
