The Surprising Amazingness of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

in on 10/28/15 by Jamie 8 Comments

I get it. The concept seems crazy. Who moves across the country on the slim, ney, miniscule chance of getting back to getting with your ex that you haven’t seen since that one magical summer at overnight camp 10 years prior? It’s more nuanced than that! Or at least, that is what Rebecca Bunch, the protagonist of this musical comedy, likes to say in defense of her actions. Enter Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Don’t fret, this isn’t the adult version of Lizzie McGuire (although that may have been awesome), but Rebecca is in clear denial of her underlying motives. And oh boy, can I relate.

She does the thing that we contemplate in our head, but somehow talk ourselves out of because of not wanting to seem crazy. Well, what if that wasn’t an issue? Remember when some light stalking was socially acceptable? I mean, how else were you supposed to talk to someone before the age of cell phones when you wanted to display your annoyance at being stood up by showing up at their work…15 miles from your house when you actually had to call the store for directions…? This is the tale of what happens when you can fully let out your crazy and deny, deny away.

In addition to giving a voice to my inner creepster, this show also pays homage and makes fun of musicals with a little wink and a nod. What you realize as you watch the episodes is that this is not a guy’s perspective on his crazy ex, this is a woman’s take of the slow unraveling and ultimate mental breakdown in a dark comedy that keeps itself light with the singing, harmonizing and dance numbers. What lady can’t relate to this sexy little number…

Rachel Bloom (who plays Rebecca Bunch) is a brave, brave lady proudly showing her tummy and spanx on national TV. You, madame, are braver than I. Rachel  or her producers are really smart and filled the rest of the cast with some amazing actors. If you didn’t realize, Prince Hans himself, or Prince Charming, if you caught him in Cinderella on broadway is a supporting character on the show. Friends with the Ex, Josh and quite interested in Rebecca herself, Santino Fontana becomes the underdog and the guy you cheer on.

Add in your friend that fully supports and encourages the crazy (and gives some amazing harmonies) and we’ve got the makings of one must-see show you need in  your life. You can easily catch up with the first three episodes on the CW app, online, on demand and probably hulu. Do yourself a favor and watch this refreshingly dark and yet sometimes laugh-out-loud comedy. TRUST.
