Even though the majority of the movie falls on Matt Damon’s shoulders as Mark (which he carries pretty effortlessly), the supporting cast in this movie is of a super high caliber. Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Chastain, Sean Bean, Michael Pena, and Kate Mara are all in the same movie. I mean come on. But it’s one specific member of the supporting cast that I have very important thoughts on today.
Sebastian Stan plays Dr. Chris Beck in the movie, and he’s my new astronaut boyfriend.Source
What a hunk. Look at that chiseled jaw! This is one of his official NASA portraits too. Is it possible that a photo taken for work purposes can look this good? Every work ID I’ve ever had begs to differ.
Another thing that occurred to me during the movie that I’ve seen other people comment on as well is how soft everyone’s NASA gear looked. And we all know what that means. Say it with me: SPACE SNUGGLES!
Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen the movie yet
He even gets an adorable little romantic story line. I was glad that they kept a few of the scenes between him and Kate Mara’s character Beth Johanssen in the movie, because it wasn’t an enormous part of the book and easily could have been cut. It wasn’t incredibly heavy handed, just a few moments where you go “Aww they’re cute.”
When was the last time your boyfriend gave you an adorable hand squeeze and looked at you with puppy dog eyes as you handed him a hastily made impromptu bomb? The answer is of course never, because your boyfriend is not astronaut/EVA specialist/flight surgeon/total stud Dr. Chris Beck.
And then. AND THEN…I really liked the little vignettes that plays over the credits that show us what everyone is up to back on Earth. Mark teaches the new recruits, Martinez goes back up on the next Ares mission, and Chris and Beth have a baby. Prepare yourself for gross and obscene images.
The day after we saw the movie, Best Friend and I texted each other for at least fifteen minutes about the Dad Khakis. Who’s going to believe that this dorky dad once did all kinds of badass space action?
Would I ever go into space? Hell no. Would I go if Chris Beck were going too? Still no, but I’d feel way worse about turning it down.
