First impression of CW Seed’s Newest Animated Web series, Vixen

in on 08/26/15 by Jamie Leave a Comment

I am all for expanding the DC television universe currently on air and being developed on the CW and CBS. I’m all about Arrow’s smolder, dark alleys and kickass fight scenes and enjoy the more quirky powers and villain of the week vibe of Flash. It’s fun when the characters of each series crossover into each other’s cities. Legend’s of Tomorrow, the newest series that will premiere mid-season, is somewhat the product of this idea. Villains and heroes of each series will be put together will some yet to be determined destiny. How will they get along? What friendships will form? Who will hate each other and sabotage their missions? Who will become our OTP? So many possibilities! While I am disappointed that Supergirl will not likely have much potential for crossover as CBS is keeping their A-list character on a tight leash, I am excited about the latest entry into this fantastic world, Vixen. Not only are we getting a new superhero, but she is a women and a minority. It is so rare that women, let alone women of color, take a leading role on one of these shows. It is a bit disappointing that it is only animation (GET THE HINT, COMIC BOOK TV/MOVIE PRODUCERS, WE WANT MORE.)

Don’t get me wrong, animated series is how I was introduced to the comic book hero. And even as an adult without any kids, I still watch several of the animated movies (which often are much more gruesome than their broadcast versions,) on demand or through streaming services. So I have met Vixen in various incarnations and was most familiar from Justice League Unlimited. (See the clip below which is pretty much every guy’s fantasy and happy dream.) Don’t fret, Wonder Woman is under some sort of mind control, she didn’t go rogue.

  • Whoa, even the Flash can’t catch her?
  • I thought animated Stephen Amell Arrow would be, you know, bigger
  • This is quite different from the I-make-the-Green-Lantern-melt-with-just-one-look kind of sexy
  • Is this pre-I can go back in time Barry? Because I imagine if you can run fast enough to time travel, you should be able to catch a person newly into their powers. Even if the speed is that of a cheetah, Barry, you should be faster.
  • I wonder what animated Felicity looks like.
  • Her origin story seems like it is going to be completely different
  • THIS EPISODE IS ONLY 5 MINUTES?!?

Hard to form a fully formed opinion on the series yet after only 5 minutes, but this could be promising. This series will be within the Flash/Arrow/Legends of Tomorrow universe, so this is canon. Will be cool if she gets mentioned on the live action series.

And for next week? I hope this doesn’t turn into a Spidey/Uncle Ben moment.
