For the uninitiated or just the plain young, Mick Rock is an infamous rock photographer who’s shot everyone. Instead of the the “man who shot the world,” Mick is called the man who shot the seventies and if you’re a music follower and have a weird obsession with movies like Almost Famous, you KNOW this means he’s seen a lot. The seventies were a golden period in rock music and history, the liberation, the freedom to explore musically, the transition from groups like the Beatles and Rolling Stones to Bowie and Queen, Lou Reed, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones and on. This definitely wasn’t your parents rock music anymore.
If you’ve been around me for any time you might know about my fascination with David Bowie… so hearing that Bowie’s official photographer, the man who shot so many of the images we know of David, had his own show I was pumped. You can see my Bowie love from my favorite shirt of all time
(I had a hard time choosing which of the 20384027452845 pictures of me in the shirt I wanted to share. So I went with me in a Swiss cafe)
to my Rock N Roll costumed birthday party…
Yea, I think this image pretty much sums it up. I still have the wig if anyone’s interested in that sweet, sweet Aladdin Sane look.
The cool thing about the show isn’t that it’s just about Mick or his photography, it’s Mick meeting up with musicians in their hometown to explore and discover and chat about what makes them tick. Think Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown meets rock n roll musicians.
On this season of Mick Rock, Mick meets up with…
Cool cats and dirty hippies, The Flaming Lips
For the Robsten lover in us all… Kings of Leon
Rollerblades + White Sweater. Where’s Caleb?
and really who would miss the Josh Groban episode?
You KNOW Groban knows how to party.
I’ll leave you with Mick talking Bowie… but of course!
Tune in for more rock music and history and hometowns on On The Record with Mick Rock on Ovation Sunday, August 2, 8pm ET
