So with the rise and domination of YouTube, it doesn’t come as a shock that viewers want to be a part of the action, and for many there is no easier subject to talk about then yourself and your interests. Enter the lifestyle vlog, which is essentially lifestyle magazines put to life by a iPhone 6.
I’m going to admit it right now: I’m addicted to lifestyle vlogs. But if you do a search on Google for it, you will get over 1 million results and many of these vlogs are not one size fits all style. But never fear: here are just a few of my favorite YouTube lifestyle vlogs.
Ingrid Nilsen
Hands down, Ingrid Nilsen has to be the world’s most upbeat person. Read her “About” description on her YouTube channel page, and try not to succumb to the cuteness. (You will fail.):
Oh, hello! I’m Ingrid Nilsen and welcome to my little internet oasis! Get ready for beauty, fashion and healthy food how-to’s with a sprinkle of weird. The good kind of weird. I pinky promise!
Even her description is all kinds of adorable!
Just last month, Nilsen made headlines by coming out of the closet and recording her testimony to the world. The video alone received 11 million views and hundreds of comments of support and respect.
But for me, it’s her eclectic collection of vlogs that drew my attention. Whether it’s how to dress during hot summer days or how to have the perfect morning, Ingrid Nilsen’s videos are the combined effort of great ideas, fantastic editing, and music that you quickly add to your Pandora playlist. But above all, it’s the energetic star herself that makes you not only keep clicking on to the next video, but wish you had a Ingrid Nilsen in your own circle of friends.
One of my favorite Ingrid videos? Watch her detail her road trip to Portland, Maine. Dear Portland, I think you have a new spokesperson.
Tanya Burr
If you’re like me, you have a drawer full of makeup products and sometimes not one idea on how to use them. When Tiff is unavailable, my next solution is YouTube. Sometimes, this could be a problem. There are almost 10 million makeup videos on YouTube, and many of them are either done by people who don’t know how to use makeup either and end up looking like a hyper child made them over; or they’re so complicated, they require that you have your cosmetology license to even attempt the look.
So, for me, Tanya Burr is a fresh mist of Evian toner.
First of all, her British accent makes my anglophilia rise to an all time high. Second, her makeup tutorial videos are simple to follow and make you believe that you are the world’s greatest makeup artist. And many of her tutorials take some of the looks we see and love in popular culture, and make it accessible for the plebeians here in real life. Want to emulate Emma Watson? She’s got a routine for you? Want to get your inner Zooey Deschanel on? Tanya will show you how.
The video I absolutely love is her tutorial on Bella Swan’s wedding look. It’s easy to do (especially the eyes) and is versatile for day and night. (Anytime I wear this look, I always receive a slew of compliments.)
But what I love most is how much of a fan girl Tanya Burr is during this video. Welcome to That’s Normal, Tanya, where fangirling is both an art form and a sport.
In 2016, I vow to have these two girls in my own squad.
MyHarto (My Drunk Kitchen)
If you have never seen Hannah Hart and her series, My Drunk Kitchen, stop reading right now, click on a new tab, go to YouTube and find it. I’ll be here when you get back.
Here at That’s Normal, you know we love food, but sometimes we love alcohol a lot little more. So that makes My Drunk Kitchen my favorite cooking show: amazing recipes mixed with epic drinking. Hey, Food Network: I would be more partial to watch Ina Garten if she was guzzling a pitcher of margaritas while making coq au vin.
And although some people get a little obnoxious when drunk (I’m not pointing fingers…), Hart’s drunk reminds you of that friend who only gets better when you get white girl wasted. She leaves us laughing, hungry and willingly filling up our own wine glasses. Hangover worth it!
What’s also amazing about her channel is her vast array of guest stars including Sarah Silverman, John Green, and my favorite: Jamie Oliver.
