Ticket to the Moon
I received a “press” copy of the book that included all of the marketing material which helped make this a little more intriguing to read. Your ticket to the lunar colony, the national anthem of the colony.
This book wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for The Hunger Games, Divergent and even The Giver. Dove Arising is the story of a distopian society led by scientists that left earth to escape the pollution and global warming. No religion, secret band of governing leaders known as “The Committee” that reminds me of the security council from Shield.
Phaet
Phaet Theta (pronounced Fate) is a 15-16 year old who lives with her two younger siblings and her mother in their advanced pod in Base IV. Nine years ago, her father died in a “transport” accident. Since then she has barely spoken. After school, she works in one of the greenhouses with her best friend that produces the food for the colony. Her mother is a journalist that writes for the Luna Daily, the canned very controlled opinions for the residents of the moon to read. When her mother, Mira, returns home after work she looks sick but tries to brush it off as nothing. Given the sterile and confined nature of the living pods, any sort of sickness is registered by the internal system in the pod, they are immediately placed into quarantine. Without the income from her mother’s job, Phaet and her siblings face eviction and reassignment to the Shelter, the poverty-stricken section of the colony.
Militia Security Squad
Phaet’s next move to save her family is to join the conlony’s miliita squad, First she must train, and then rank high enough to recieve a bonus and stipend that will keep her siblings in their pod. Even with the similarires to other distopian YA books, I still read with eager anticipation. During training she makes a friend, Wes, that helps with her training and even may develop into a little bit of a love story, if not a love triangle.
Cliffhangers & Secret Agents
While in training, Phaet’s mother is accused of crime, this is where the story is able to take it’s own place in the YA Sci-Fi world but it ends with such a cliffhanger! Is her mother a secret agent? What is Wes’s motivation? Is he trying to help her? I hope it’s not to long before the next book comes out. There is so much more that needs to be explained and I want to see the story finished.
The book is a solid B- book that hopefully the rest of the series will elevate. Get in now!
Reading this makes me wonder about living on moon, would you go or stay on earth?
