It feels like forever since 30 rock has been on TV (since I now primarily watch reruns on my ipad before bed while texting 30 rock quotes to my bestie.) And just when I wondered how may times I could watch the same seasons over and over, Netflix came through with a program showcasing humor and a fresh take on society seen through funny scenarios and outrageous situations similar to 30 Rock in the new comedy, the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It probably helps that it was co-created by Tina Fey, you know, the one that brought us gems such as…
Sorry, I could post Liz Lemon gifs all day long. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a comedy about a girl kidnapped by a cult, forced to live in a bunker and is finally rescued 15 years later. Imagine coming into modern society when you have been 15 years removed. Basically it is a hilarious take on a fish out of water story while making us take a look at ourselves through Kimmy’s eyes. Us modern folks are a strange bunch.
Theme Song
The creators had a genius idea of getting the guys who do the remix, auto-tune YouTube classics to do the theme song. Here is the full extended version. Warning: this is super catching. Don’t be surprised if you are singing this at your desk all day long, annoying your coworkers and confusing at least one coworker that thinks this was a real interview turned into a song.
Ellie Kemper
You may know her from The Office, or as a Bridesmaid, you may even know her as the girlfriend of Mindy’s boyfriend on The Mindy Project from the first season. Ellie Kemper is a ginger national treasure, up there with Amy Adams and Jessica Chastain. She truly shines as Ellie Kemper, keeping you routing for her character even though that much positivity usually makes us (or just me) want to hit people upside the head. Modern audiences generally prefer snark and wit, but there is something about Kimmy Schmidt that keeps you laughing with her and maybe a little at her too.
Pro tip: If you live near a Wegmen’s, their candle aisle is quite impressive and less expensive than the questionable bulk candy store in the mall.
Story of my life.
Despite what most people feel when moving to New York and all they can afford is a closet, it seems pretty spacious to a Indiana Mole woman (the clever name the media gave the kidnapped ladies living in the bunker.)
The Supporting Cast
Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski, Carol Kane plus the fantastic guest spots. It is a recipe for magic and laughs.
Quirky Masterpiece
Until I found myself binge-watching the show with a huge smile on my face, I didn’t realize how much I missed this type of comedy. Well done Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, you have done well with this quirky masterpiece.
Are you watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? Do you miss 30 Rock? Is Liz Lemon not-so-secretly your hero?
