It’s time we talk Tom Hardy, because… damn… this guy going under the radar has gone on for long enough.
All British boys all the time. Welcome to Union Jack’d.
The first time I noticed Tom Hardy was in Warrior (2011). He played Tommy Conlon, a troubled young Mixed Martial Arts fighter training with his alcoholic father. Admittedly, I watched this movie solely because it was “husband’s choice” that night, but was completely astounded by the quality of acting. The scenes between Hardy and Joel Edgerton (playing older brother Brendan) were amazing. Honestly, the whole movie is just fantastic. #allthefeels

So then I was like, oh, that’s that guy from Inception (2010). Yes. Yes, to this whole leaned back, sleeves rolled up to the elbows, perfect hair, gold watch look.
And, hey, that’s Handsome Bob from RocknRolla (2008). He’s in love with Gerard Butler, which is probably the best thing to ever happen on film.
What, he’s also one of the hotties from Black Hawk Down (2001)?!?
Let’s just say, if there’s a manly movie out there that most women will enjoy too, Tom Hardy has been in it. Which brings me to The Dark Knight Rises (2012), a movie where its creators said, “Let’s cast the man with arguably the hottest lips ever created, put them behind a S&M mask so people never see them and then rework his voice to make him sound like a eunuch.” Seriously? You appall me, Christopher Nolan.
Luckily, 2012 also brought us This Means War, a romantic action comedy about two best friend spies fighting over Reese Witherspoon. Did I mention the best friend was Chris Pine? Or that they wear wonderfully tailored suits pretty much the ENTIRE movie?
He was in quite a few gritty crime dramas after that, Locke (2013) and The Drop (2014). That genre isn’t my personal favorite so I haven’t seen either, but both received rave reviews. Upcoming projects include The Revenant (2015) costarring Leonardo DiCaprio and the Russian historical flick Child 44 (2015). All I can say is… this picture makes me think of Shura from The Bronze Horseman, which is a very good thing.
Hardy is also billed to play Rick Flag in DC Comic’s Suicide Squad in 2016. Jared Leto and Will Smith have been cast for the super-villain romp, so it’s almost guaranteed to be good.
Hardy’s most anticipated movie, however, has to be Mad Max: Fury Road. I’m super pumped about this movie because… (1) I love Mad Max. I watched all the old Mel Gibson flicks when I was younger. (2) Nicholas Hoult, my #1 British boy, is in it. (3) Charlize Theron is bald and guaranteed to kick @ss like always.
IRL, Tom Hardy has no social media, but… lawdy did he used to! All accounts have long since been deleted, but the world will never forget when this happened on Myspace.
He’s also intriguingly honest with media questions. He openly admits to battling addictions to alcohol and cocaine in his 20’s and that he’d “probably have done well in prison.” When asked by Attitude magazine in 2008 about sex with men, Hardy answered, “As a boy? Of course I have. I’m an actor for fuck’s sake. I’m an artist. I’ve played with everything and everyone. But I’m not into men sexually. I love the form and the physicality but the gay sex bit does nothing for me. To me it just doesn’t compute. Now I’m into my 30’s and it doesn’t do it for me and I’m done experimenting.”
Now he’s married to Charlotte Riley whom he met on the set of Wuthering Heights in 2008. And, yes, he played Heathcliff.
Tom Hardy, for all this and more, we love you and #thatsnormal
