Girl Lux is much more than just an apparel company for girls. Their mission is to offer underwear and sportswear that are quality, stylish, and age-appropriate. They are a woman-owned and a woman-run company with the goal of empowering girls with products that make them feel beautiful, inside and out.
This is why I wanted to share Girl Lux with the TN community. We are mostly women, and several of you are moms, who I am certain would love this product. And TN is just the place that Girl Lux President, Melissa would fit nicely in. How do I know? I sat down with Melissa and asked her a few questions about her and about her company.
Current Obsession
Besides your love of West Wing (our mutual obsession with Sam & Josh) what are you obsessing over right now?
Taylor Swift’s new album, watching cat videos on YouTube (her Favorite Maru here), and waiting for the new season of Downton Abbey.
hmmm… She’s definitely one of our people!
About Girl Lux

Tell us about you.
I am originally from a small farm town in Utah but have been living on the East coast for almost 10 years. My background is business development and communications but since starting this company, I realized how much I love design. I love to read, travel, listen to a wide range of music and have lately found that country music is the most soothing when I’m experiencing stress. Oh and I love to eat! Especially Korean food or Ethiopian food.
Why was this project one you wanted to take on?
I was so surprised when I heard from my friends that have daughters at this age that nothing has changed in 20 years when it comes to products that help girls through this awkward difficult stage we call puberty.
What is the feedback you’ve heard from moms?
Mainly how frustrated they are with the products that are available and how they are not age appropriate and how terrible the quality of the products are. I had one mom gather all of the training bras she had bought her daughter for the past year and that they had spent over $2,000 on products and none of them she would wear after the first washing. They would shrink and the straps would get twisted and the quality of the fabric was so bad that the daughter never wanted to wear it again.
What was your experience getting your first bra?
Terrible. I was one of the first girls in my class to have to wear a bra. I was in 4th grade and the only bra that was available was the quilted bra with the pink flower in the center. It was scratchy and so uncomfortable. But the worst was being teased by the boys.
If there is one thing to take away from Girl Lux, what is that?
The transition from a girl to a young woman should be something we celebrate and help girls look forward to. This is something that unifies all of us as women – regardless of race, size, economics, sexual orientation, etc. We as women have all be through this stage and we need to figure out a way to make it easier and more celebrated for this next generation of girls.
Many of our TN Readers are moms, will Girl Lux offer women’s sizes?
Girl Lux is focused on providing products for girls, ages 8-14 years old, but our sizes run large enough for adult women to wear as well. Girl Lux hopes to expand to a women’s line in the next few years. We know that there are not a lot of options of “beige” out there now for women and we want everyone girl and woman to be able to have a quality, comfortable bra that is unique to their own shade.
