TN’s Guide to Gifts that Don’t Suck: Oyster books

in on 12/04/14 by Bekah 14 Comments

I have a confession. One I am slightly embarrassed about. And by slightly, I mean more than slightly. After a quick estimate, my Amazon bill for regency romance books this year is over $118.00. That’s a lot of books because Regency books are CHEAP. And that’s the problem. Because the next book in the “Hottest Duke Ever to have Hit the Ton” series (“Sexiest Earl out for a Stroll in Hyde Park,” of course) is only $4.29. And I can get it in seconds when I still have 20 minutes left on my commute. To make matters worse, the $118 bill is mostly from the first half of the year because I got smart and now share a Nook log in with Beth I got smart, okay? So yes, I could save $118+ a year and just…. stroll into the library and check them out. BUT THEN PEOPLE WOULD KNOW I READ THAT MUCH REGENCY. (People other than you guys, you won’t tell, right?) But in the last two months my life has changed. And that’s because I discovered Oyster.

Oyster Books: It’s like Netflix for Books

I heard of Oyster last year. In fact, we recommended it in last year’s gift guide, but I didn’t get around to trying it out until recently. And my life has changed. My wallet is fuller! And without any embarrassing treks to the Library! Oyster is like Netflix for books. You pay a monthly fee ($9.95) for unlimited access to ALL of the books in the library (over 500,000 titles!). You can read on the web, on your phone or table, and there is no contract. There are no catches. And they have SO many books. No- they won’t have the latest release right away (just like Netflix won’t) but they get the hot titles eventually. And, as you can guess, they have plenty of regency romance to keep me happy. I’m catching up on all the best-sellers of the 1990s as we speak!
