Happy 200th Episodeversary, Supernatural!
This week we knew we were in for some metafiction– mega MUSICAL metafiction to be exact. So when we started out at an all girl’s school reenacting Dean and Sam’s lives via stage play, I was all #thatsnormal. When I heard about a cover of ‘Carry on Wayward Son’ in the second act and when the teens had a BM (boy melodrama) moment because as the play’s director put it, “You can’t spell subtext without s – e – x.” I needed a moment.
But let’s get to this week’s case. Film teacher gets nabbed…
Film student gets nabbed…
What’s the connection? Beef with our tiny dictator director Marie, maybe?
But the Winchesters don’t condemn the girls and, honestly, they seem too adorable to be doing anything on purpose. The plot thickens when Sam gets nabbed and wakes up in the school basement.
The baddie is revealed and dispatched pretty quickly. As it turns out her name was Calliope, she was a Supernatural fan per her comment, “Life, death, resurrection, redemption, family, and music you can really tap your toe too.” She could also control the scarecrow from Batman Begins or some such. But who cares?!? I don’t care. We need to get to my Top 3 Meta Moments.
3. The “Samulet”
The backstory for Dean’s amulet is one of my favorites– two young brothers stuck in a hotel room on Christmas, scraping by to feed and protect themselves. Sam gives Dean an amulet necklace that he wears everyday for most of his life.
Dean famously trashed the amulet in Season 5, Episode 16 “Dark Side of the Moon,” breaking lots of little hearts in our fandom. When Marie gives Dean the replica “Samulet,” and then Dean hangs it on the Impala’s rearview mirror at the end of this episode it was…epic bromance.
2. The “Single Man Tear” song.
These two girls playing my two brothers are singing everything I’ve wanted to hear for 199 episodes. I slow clapped just like the audience full of purple gooey people who just had a scarecrow explode on them.
1. The “Carry On My Wayward Son” cover song.
OMG, you guys, I had a real moment with the Winchesters right here. The piano solo, the voices of the super talented girls involved with the play. I got a little misty eyed. I am not joking. Probably no one but other fans who have been there since 2005 Season 1 will understand, but it hit me in the #feels. It even reminded me that Adam is still trapped in hell. WTH? Go rescue Adam, you guys!
Stage Sam to stage Dean: “The two of us against the world.”
Real Sam to real Dean: “What she said.”
This episode was just fantastic. It honored the show’s achievement while still nudging the story forward for Season 10. Dean is getting stronger. Sam and Dean are puttin’ out those brotherly vibes again. And…WTF?!? Chuck is back! #cannoteven
