have now attended THREE Comic Conventions! So basically I’m an expert. In this episode of Storytime with That’s Normal, let me first tell you about New York Comic Con vs. San Diego Comic Con
New York City is still New York City
Nikki mused the other day what the differences might be between NYCC and SDCC and they were VAST. SDCC takes over an entire area of San Diego. You can’t move without bumping into someone’s foam bow and arrow set or getting hit in the face by a wing. Unless you were within a block of the Javitz center in New York City, you would have no idea Comic Con was going on. Once inside the convention center, stepping on someone’s tail was inevitable, thankfully. It wouldn’t be a comic con without shitting yourself over that scary ‘thing’ with the yellow eyes following you to the bathroom (turns out it was just a girl who really had to pee)
But NYC was still NYC {and Midtown was still the most overrated place ever}
Be Careful which Halal cart you choose
Because at 2 am you might order from the wrong cart and then order the same meal again from the Halal Guys where you meant to order from in the first place. Please note: That’s Normal does not recommend Halal street food at 2 am, no matter how good of an idea it sounds at the time.
NYCC Is less about pop culture and more about {shocker} comics.
That was evident from the lack of movie studio booths in the exhibit hall and TV shows with interactive exhibits outside of the convention.
Starz had great representation with a Black Sails {more on that later} and we made sure to do a photo-shoot with a hot pirate and a prostitute:
We went to approximately the same amount of panels as in San Diego
And that would be one {Although Jamie went to a few others. Of course she went to the Stephen Amell panel)
We have tons to share about Black Sails & I TOTALLY fell in love with Toby Stephens, so more on that later!
We did feel that compared to past comic cons, NYCC 2014 had less of what we’re generally drawn to (ex: YA book to movies starring hot guys. That’s just one example though…), but it was nice to be in an exhibit hall that you could ACTUALLY walk through with minimal body odor lingering on your skin from that guy who wore a dinosaur costume from The Hobbit* for 3 days in a row. (Not to say that it wasn’t crowded. IT WAS. Also yes. I’m aware it’s probably not a dinosaur.)
NYCC is more fun with Friends
After the first day, we were joined by our BFFs at Fangirlish: Erin, Elena, Andie & Melissa. Crazytimes ensued.
There was jumping on beds:
Loading
Photoshoots in revolving doors with Andie
Duck faces with Erin
Bathroom photoshoots with Elena
Plus we saw some other peeps like Harry Potter Cosplaying Friends
Kevin Avery, writer of action figure erotic fanfiction (serious) and also comedian/writer on Last week Tonight with John Oliver & all around amazing person:
Morning press rooms aren’t fun after a few hours of sleep
okay maybe some gin was involved too…
And TN isn’t complete with just 3
We were HASHTAG BLESSED at SDCC to have the fab five {original} TN team together PLUS guest appearance by Katy, and at NYCC it was just me + Nikki repping’ TN until Jamie showed up on Saturday and while we had a fabulous time taking the pizza shop two blocks away city by storm, we missed our normal comic con roomies Beth & Elise BIG TIME:
No one is at Times Square at 4 am
And I’m usually one of them, but instead of pretending I didn’t actually go there, Jamie and I decided to document it for you:
Overall, NYCC was a really great time. We actually (gasp) looked at Comic Stuff, got some great INSIDER info to share about a few things we think you’ll love and have a few feet blisters to prove we were there!
