All British boys all the time. Welcome to Union Jack’d. This week, we talk Tobias Menzies.
So this is the one where I cyberstalk Tobias Menzies, but I’m going to stay respectable and stick to his past work … not, like, tell you he’s 6’1, a Pisces, and an expert swordsman.
After some digging, I found that Tobias’s big break came in 1998 when he was cast as Frank Gallagher on the British TV show Casualty. His character is described as a ‘heroine-addicted, wayward son.’ Let’s watch his first major scene…it starts at 8:51.
Frank does in fact turn his life around in the next season, but still dies tragically at the hands of drug dealers. Poor Frankie G.
Tobias spent the next few years with scintillating roles such as ‘Theatre Patron 5’ in Johnny Depp’s Finding Neverland and White Feather in the awesome looking Ultimate Force. He was also Villiers (the guy who occasionally calls M to report Bond’s whereabouts) in the 2006 Casino Royale.
Then came HBO’s Rome, a legitimately good TV series along the lines of Game of Thrones, and the character Marcus Junius Brutus. “Et tu, Brute?” Check out this dramatically scored Youtube montage, because nothing says “Let’s all stab Caesar” like Evanescence.
In 2010, he made an independent film called Forget Me Not. I really want to see this flick. Unfortunately, the cheapest copy available is a “Used-Acceptable-Ex-Library” DVD for a whopping $18.97. Still, I might buy it because Tobias Menzies is playing a romantic character and he’s carrying a guitar case, folks. A. Guitar. Case. #yaas
Also in 2010, he made the sci-fi TV series The Deep, which is available on Hulu Plus. In a nerdy, oceanographer way, this series is decent TV. Tobias’s character, Raymond, spends most of his time alternating between hero and suspected villain, a duality that Menzies truly excels at. It also stars Minnie Driver. Below the Arctic ice sheet…so that’s where she’s been…hmmm.

2013 brought Tobias back home to HBO with the recurring role as Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones. Edmure’s arranged marriage is a major plot device for Season 3, a story arc which ends with the lethal Red Wedding. Edmure was taken hostage in the finale and show creators have yet to reveal if the character (or Tobias) will return.

Which brings us to 2014 and the devilishly handsome Frank/Black Jack Randall of Starz Outlander. Now, I know we’re supposed to be all pro-Jamie, but I’m getting a little excited about these characters. I’ve been #randallized and I’m not alone. Just check out this Comic Con post if you need more proof.

Also on the horizon is a TV mini-series titled The Honourable Woman starring one of my favorite celebrity gals, Maggie Gyllenhaal. This politically fueled drama is set in the Middle East and will probably win lots of awards. Regardless, Tobias is in a suit and appears to be some sort of secret agent speaking into a cufflink… Win.

There’s also a British TV series titled Puppy Love announced on Tobias’s IMDb. The description reads, “Puppy Love is a story of love, dogs and the love of dogs.” I picture this show as just a live feed of Tobias surrounded by adorable puppies that lick his face.
For all these reasons and more, Tobias Menzies I love you and #thatsnormal.
Other times we’ve waxed intellectual about Tobias:
