The Story
Jonas is just like everyone else. His naughty bits start tingling one day, and he tells his parents, because no one lies here, and she tells him his “stirring” is normal, but totally going to die now that he gets to take his morning anti-boner pills. Poor Jonas knows no better. But also, he’s really excited about graduating from primary school to ITT technical institute where he gets to get a vocation. Will he get to be a day care worker like his dad, or a gardener? SO EXCITING! But no, Jonas gets chosen as the next Receiver, which never happens to anyone because the last receiver is now THE GIVER and he’s seemingly ancient. So, in the process of learning his new role, Jonas learns more than he wanted to about how their utopia started, and what they gave up to get there. SPOILER ALERT: it was the good stuff.
The Movie
The film is sure to take the book a step farther into the future with sci-fi and greater stakes. Less Pleasantville and more Divergent. Jonas is played by Aussie Brenton Thwaites (oh he of the newsies cap and the myriad surf-shack necklaces), but also stars heavy hitters Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges and TAYLOR SWIFT! It hits theaters this weekend, and here are just a few of the things that author and stars had to say to us at Comic-Con about what to expect from the movie, and of course, what they would cosplay as:
See The Giver in LA
