Have I made my cosplays yet? Of course not.
Do I have any idea what the hell I’m going to do when I’m there? Strong no.
But I’m starting to get my game plan together, and thought I’d share some places to stalk for information, in case you’re doing the same.
First, I went to my handy “SDCC” bookmarks folder, since surely I had put some valuable resources in there last year. I love it when I think ahead like this.
Oh. Just tacos. Ok, well, here are some non-taco resources, in case you want that kind of thing.
1. SDCC Blog
This is an unofficial SDCC blog, rather, that has a ton of up-to-date information on events both in and outside of the convention hall. The official schedule doesn’t get released until 2 weeks before (around July 10), and is subject to change pretty much always, so this is a good bet to see what the latest updates are. It’s also good for speculation from people who are in the know about these things! Here’s the schedule so far. I’m going to especially keep an eye on their offsite page, which helped me out a ton last year with cool events outside the convention hall.
2. Geek and Sundry
It’s a bit of a ghost town right now, but I’d bet the Geek and Sundry forums are going to light up as we get closer to July. One of the highlights of my experience last year was hanging out at the Geek and Sundry Lounge (held at Jolt n Joe’s), where I chilled with the Vaginal Fantasy gang. I can only imagine it’s going to get even better this year, so if you like Felicia Day and/or what Geek and Sundry is about, definitely stay tuned to their forums for updates.
3. Nerd HQ
I gotta say, I’m worried about the fate of Nerd HQ this year. Usually put on by Zachary Levi’s organization The Nerd Machine, Nerd HQ offers intimate (seriously, Nikki and I were thisclose to the King of the North) interviews and events with big names. Last year, it was held at Petco Park. This year, I can’t find any information about it whatsoever. That wouldn’t be too worrisome, because things are always released last minute with Comic Con, save for two bits of evidence: they didn’t even come close to their fundraising goal for 2014 (and said they were doing a campaign because their typical fundraising wasn’t working), and just yesterday, I was alerted to the plans for these MTV fan awards to be held at Petco Park this year.
3. Gaslamp District
This isn’t the sexiest website in the world, but hey: all these offsite events have to get permits from the city to operate and/or deface the buildings of the Gaslamp District in San Diego. Therefore, this Comic-Con-specific section of the city’s website will have a lot of info. It’s all still from 2013 right now, but check back on this one, particularly at the Google Map with locations of all the various attractions and events throughout that area. I definitely could have used that last year!
Alright, that does it for my pre-planning. I feel sufficiently prepared to prepare, now. Onto cosplay!
