And have a heart attack we did. If you haven’t seen it yet, I suggest you take a seat, grab a paper bag to hyperventilate into, and call out of work for the day. Because here it is:
*A warning to those who haven’t read the book yet, Mockingjay spoilers ahead*
You guys. Peeta. PEETA!!! Before I completely lose my mind over him let’s go through this thing bit by bit. I think it was such a good choice to take the Capitol propaganda route, and the all white theme looks so cool and creepy at the same time. President Snow is up to his usual jag ways and talking some crap about what a solid system Panem is founded on from his Throne of Lies. The camera is moving in a slow circle around him and as words like “Unity,” “Prosperity,” and “Sacrifice” appear on screen, we can see that he’s not alone. Someone is standing next to him.
Just as things start to get really sinister, when Snow tells the citizens of the districts that if they try and rebel against the system bad things are going to happen, the camera pans out and we see that it’s Peeta looking off into the distance. Then, as President Snow declares, “Panem today, Panem tomorrow, Panem forever,” Peeta looks directly into the camera. And cut to black! We all know what happens to Peeta in the Capitol, which is why this trailer is incredible but at the same time not at all okay.
SOBBING FOR ALL ETERNITY. Let’s break this down: Peeta Mellark comes from an abusive household, is a tribute in two Hunger Games, and is then captured and tortured by the Capitol. He would have rather died in the Games than become a Capitol pawn and that’s exactly what happens to him. I can’t. I CAN’T. They even put subtle details in his costume. It’s a lot like his white suit from “Catching Fire,” but right at his collar there’s something sharp looking pointed right at his throat. And if they keep the all white theme for this part of the movie, it will make it all the more effective for the moment when Peeta warns District 13 that the Captiol is coming and is beaten and dragged away. All that blood on the crisp white.
Also, huge props to Josh Hutcherson, who is able to do so much with just one look. We know that he loves playing this character and takes it very seriously, and that a lot of fans were excited to see what he was going to do with the new direction the character takes. There’s no such thing as too much Peeta and I can’t wait to see even more. For any fans who were a little disappointed that we didn’t get to see Katniss or any other characters, apparently there’s another trailer coming soon.
I would imagine that the next one will either be a more traditional trailer, or a response to this one with Katniss and the rest of the rebels. Which would be amazing. Regardless of which direction they decide to go in, the official countdown to “Mockingjay- Part 1” has begun and the Hunger Games fandom is ready to go. Strap in, get excited, and let this face haunt your dreams.
I may not survive this movie. I’m officially concerned…
What do you think of the teaser trailer? Did you completely lose it? Are your Peeta feels out of control like mine?!
