With a long list of shows that will not be returning in the fall (I am in total denial about Community – #sixseasonsandamovie), the networks have teed up several new shows to present at network Upfronts. Upfronts are essentially a big party presentation where the networks bring out the dog and pony show so big advertisers and media buyers will buy all those GRPs months in advance in the hope that these shows will be mega successful. One show creating a lot of buzz, perhaps due to the social relevancy is Selfie.
Selfie‘s future success is riding on the back of the gorgeous ginge, Karen Gillan. Perhaps the network believes Karen’s large Doctor Who fandom will follow her to this ABC network prime time show with fellow fandom favorite John Cho (Star Trek movies). Seriously, what is there not to love about these stars?
Karen as Amy Pond has been a fan favorite for years. Since leaving the show (still not over it), she has gone on to star in a few movies including the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. I’m not quite sure about this move back onto TV, but perhaps like fellow GotG co-star, Chris Pratt, she thinks a small screen/big screen career is possible. And although it may be hard for us Whovians to believe, Doctor Who pulls around 2.1 million average viewers on BBCA, while a successful ABC comedy can pull 9-13 million viewers. The move to a bigger network makes sense.
However, I think because we live so closely intertwined into the fandom life bubble. It is more likely that main stream America is not familiar with Karen at all, even if she does give good face.
Selfie is a modern day telling or very loosely based on My Fair Lady. Where instead of having a cockney, lower class accident, Eliza speaks the international language of self-obsession.
Immediate Trailer Reactions:
- Karen Gillan is like, really pretty
- Diverse cast! You go ABC!
- Trailer-induced chuckles
- How will they have enough materials for more than one season?
- Will the term, “Selfie” be outdated in a couple years and make the show feel dated?
- The chance of non-ironic social media promotion for the show is very likely, therefore making it ironic
- Fear this show will go the way of Super Fun Night (RIP)
- Is that Karen’s own hair wig?
What new shows are you looking forward to? Do you think that Selfie has a real chance?
