When Master of the Universe Fifty Shades of Grey got published I was so embarrassed for myself because I had read it as a fan fiction years before. When I read it, I thought it was an okay story for a fan fiction, and so when I found out that it was going to be published I lol’ed because there was no way anyone would want to read it, right? And then when it became mega popular I lost faith in humanity. E’vry one was readin’ their porn right out in the open and it was super weird to me.
Another thing you need to know about me is I manage a public library, and while I am not a judgey person (INFP through and through) the majority of people who work in libraries tend to be judgey about one thing- books that are written crappily (is that a word? it is now I guess). This means I am not allowed to talk about liking half of the books I actually really do like.
I am of the mindset that not everything has to be written amazingly to be enjoyed. I like, and can appreciate, a ton of books that aren’t brilliant works of art. To me when a book is enjoyable and makes me want to read it more than once, its a win. The problem is, when librarians admit to liking something like 50 Shades, they become the outcasts of library world. So I keep my love for anything untoward quiet. {But let me tell you nothing is more worrisome than getting a copy of 50 Shades of Grey in the book drop that looks like it has been compromised. And when there is “water damage” the gloves come out because of this story.}
I honestly have never read 50 Shades of Grey. I read {the fan fictions} MOTU and MOTU2 but I have no idea what was edited out and if anything was added. Based on what I have read, I thought there is NO WAY I want to see a movie like this. I have publicly and openly diss’ed this book to almost everyone I know. Then I saw who was cast as Edward Cullen Christian Grey and I knew I would never see it. Charlie Hunnam is NOT at all what I pictured him to look like, but as you know by now, a new Fifty was cast and I started to warm up to the idea of this movie.
This weekend I saw this clip from on Youtube from his interview with Graham Norton and a part of my icy heart began to thaw even further.
Based on this interview alone, I have turned over a new leaf. I have to see this new walk even if that means taking a half day off of work in the middle of the week, adorning a disguise and going to the movies all alone in the middle of the day*. The final thing you need to know about me is that I am easily persuaded by hot men with accents, but who’s judging me for that? See ya in February Jamie, Laters baby. XoXo.
*Real Talk: I once called into work sick to see a movie on in the middle of the day all by myself… that movie miiiiggghtt have been a Twilight movie.
