** SPOILER ALERT! This is a spoiler-rific Divergent movie review so TURN BACK NOW if you haven’t seen it, haven’t read the book and don’t want to be spoiled! **
Just like the movie, you should go take a pee break, grab some popcorn and settle in cause this thing is long… like to the tune of almost two and a half hours. Ok, not this post, I’m gonna try to keep this to a few minutes but dang this movie’s long but hey, at least that leaves them time to fit ALLLL the things in, right? Welllllll, maybe…
Sheo and Thailene
Source
The relationship between Shailene and Theo is like we said, for most of the movie like an “I’m obsessed and stalking my older brother’s best friend” type thing aka not hot. Then the shirt comes off, we see Four’s Amity tramp stamp and did this theater suddenly get hot? No? Ok, then carry on.
Fear Landscapes
Source
My fear landscapes are a movie theater with no popcorn and flying economy/middle seat on an international flight but Four’s and Tris’s are maybe not so pathetic. Even though I knew their fears and knew what would happen and I still got a little anxiety when the birds started flying and that tank started filling with water, that shit was scary.
Book vs Movie
Source
You know how we’ve written many posts about “accept it now!” wherein we talk about how there will inevitably be differences in the adapted versions of our favorite books? Well, Divergent is NO different, in fact there are a bunch of differences which I at first thought would be a big deal but missing the eye ball scooping scenes, no real character development outside of the Tris and sometimes Four, or Uriah or the train make out scene but hey, you can’t have it all, right? The thing in this case is that these are bigger plot items than say the yellow cabinets in Bella’s kitchen but they honestly don’t really matter at the end of the day. And with two and a half hours run time they don’t have any spare room anyway.
The Music
Ok, so I love Ellie Goulding but THREE songs on the soundtrack?! I kept asking myself during the movie, is this the same Ellie Goudling song from earlier? Also, this story is supposed to take place hundreds of years into the future but Ellie Goulding singing keeps reminding me that it’s 2014 right now and why the heck would be divided into factions? Oh yea. But big props to the a score by Junkie XL and Hans Zimmer. That’s like pairing up your Dad with the kid who’s still throwing secret raves in warehouses downtown. Weird, but it works. Your dad lends the legitimacy, security and know how while the rave kid brings the hip and dangerous. Oh and the pacifiers.
GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
You loved the books, maybe you had some gripes with the Allegiant but you love YA books and you love Tris and Four. So go see this, you will have a blast, you will bite your nails, you will swoon, you will yell I AM DIVERGENT and then dance out of the theater to Zedd. Trust me, it’s a good time.
Also, be on the lookout for yours truly… well my name at least in the film during a few special scenes!
After you’ve seen it come back here and share your own Divergent movie review!
