Move over Regina George and the Plastics, there is a new standard of perfection that people are dying to achieve. Oh man, sometimes it is just darn right amusing to write the most cliché things I can think about a movie or book and apparently I’m not the only one to go for the obvious promotional choices with this tagline: “They Suck at School”
Oy.
As I have mentioned previously, I read the Vampire Academy series a couple years ago and devoured all 6 books in near record time. And while I believed the books would have been extremely juvenile with a title such as Vampire Academy, the series was surprisingly addictive and did a good job of mixing typical high school hijinks, angsty teenage feelings and supernatural elements. What I suppose that I did not realize at the time — which should have been extremely obvious with the use of Mean Girls‘ director, Mark Waters — is that the movie, at least in the initial trailer, is coming off as a teen comedy.
Although I am now more intimately acquainted with the Vampire Academy sequel series, Blood Lines, I did not remember the first book being such a laugh riot. Sure, Rose — our protagonist — has some great lines and quips, but I got caught up in the drama between Rose and her instructor, Dimitri (he’s YUM). Looks like the studio decided to take a little bit more of a serious approach with the next couple trailers, perhaps attempting to appeal to the boyfriends that will take their honey to see Vampire Academy on V-day (that’s Valentine’s Day, not Vampire Day – although I expect some obvious marketing of V-day.) The latest TV Spots give a little more action and a little more Buffy.
What do you think? I’m biased because I read the series, but would love to know if this has appeal or feels like another teen comedy? Something about it feels very close to a spoof. Share your thoughts below!
