(spoilers abound so make sure you’re caught up on The Mindy Project)
I don’t think I’ve ever said this before but.. The Mindy Project is the best comedy on TV right now. The writing is perfect- the characters are so flawlessly developed. Case in point, in last week’s episode Danny’s dad offers Mindy more “Potato Chip Pie” and says something like, “More Pie, Mindy? Thirds?” And I LAUGHED OU LOUD because of that one word- “Thirds.” It was hilarious for no reason other than it was so consistent with Mindy’s character.
There are so many reasons to love The Mindy Project: from Mindy herself, to Morgan, to even the gay guy from Happy Endings who is a little too much Chicago accent for me but totally fits in seamlessly. THIS PART:
Then there’s Danny Castellano- a curmudgeon you can’t help but love because he sometimes says things like this:

Let’s talk about the Mid Season Finale
This past week, what has been building since the show premiered finally happened- Danny kissed Mindy. A REAL kiss. With REAL feelings. And Mindy kissed him back. And then the episode ended. And we won’t see what happens next until April 1st.
So for now we’re left to wonder…
Is this the downfall of The Mindy Project?
(I’m also wondering what LAX-JFK plane has a back area that big, but I digress) We’ve seen it so many times before- the sexual tension is what propels a story forward. And then when that tension is over and the couple gets together, the mystery is gone. The comedy ceases and… it just stops being interesting. (I even wrote about it last year– AND SAID MINDY & DANNY BETTER NOT)
Case in point: New Girl. Remember how obsessed I was with that Kiss last year? It’s still one of the hottest things I’ve ever seen, yet. But I gave this season 2 episodes and couldn’t do anymore. Maybe it’s the best thing on TV right now. Maybe the show got better after episode 2, but I was so bored and uninterested (after being TOTALLY INTO IT last year) that I don’t even care to give it a chance.
Then there’s Vampire Diaries: I was a die-hard fan. I shipped Delena from Day 1. And OMG Delena delivered- did they ever. But I haven’t watched a single episode this season. After Delana got together (and then Elena’s downfall soon after) I wasn’t interested anymore.
Has anyone dissolved sexual tension well?
Yes! Friends did it. Ross and Rachel got together. It was glorious. They had a few ah-mah-zing months and then… they were on a break (or were they?) and the most amazing break-up story I can remember watching happened. And for the rest of the show- there was always Ross and Rachel, but never Ross and Rachel. And it worked. Not to say that every season of Friends was perfect- it wasn’t (although it’s hard to remember it with anything but fondness!) but overall, they did sexual tension dissolved then ramped back up well.
So now we’re on The Mindy Project Downfall Watch
I want Mindy to be another exception to the rule. I want Mindy and Danny to be together and it still be as amazing as it was up until this point. Or I want them to not be together, yet there is still a tension that propels the show forward. I am rooting for this show. And so we’re entering The Mindy Project Downfall Watch. Officially it won’t begin until April 1st, but I want to watch & see how The Mindy Project does.
