Mockumentaries have been genius satirical entertainment since forever, and Chris Lilley (who created, wrote and plays Ja’mie) is stellar at them. Ja’mie (she added the apostrophe in Year 8) is a 17 year old private school student in an affluent part of Sydney, Australia. She’s horrible and fascinating.
She’s Regina George, but far more realistic. Rich, privileged, spoiled, conceited, hateful, oblivious, entitled, permitted. And somehow Chris Lilley, a nearly 40 year old comedian and actor and writer, has perfected the mannerisms of a teenage girl. I forget that I’m watching a dude most of the time.
It’s only 6 episodes on HBO, but you can see more of Ja’mie from Chris’ other mockumentaries, We Can Be Heroes and Summer Heights High. I’ve seen a few clips from them, and the old stuff has some of the best Ja’mie moments.
Ja’mie is the Worst
But …. sometimes I kind of want to be her. #RealQuickGroupie
So, go get a dose of the very sad mock-reality that is Private School Girl, you dumb sluts.
