My other pet peeve has to do with certain holiday movies. There are some that I like to watch every year, and catching at least a few more on TV seems almost inevitable. And pretty much every viewing, I get unnecessarily pissed when a Christmas movie falls into the same plot hole trap. There’s usually some Plucky Kid who’s excited for Christmas, but they’re getting to the age where they’re starting to question whether or not there’s really a Santa Claus. Of course they want to believe because CHRISTMAS MAGIC but there is always some group of stuffy adults who insist that the time for believing is over and that Santa isn’t real.
Except that he is.
In the reality the film has set up, there really is a Santa Claus, who really drops down the chimney and delivers presents to every good girl and boy on Christmas Eve. And has presumably done so every year of Plucky Kid’s life. So my question is…
Why aren’t those cynical adults confused as hell every Christmas morning?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I can’t be the only person that this has occurred to. It happens too often in these movies, even the most successful and beloved ones (Elf, The Santa Clause, etc…). Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike an entire movie as a whole just because this happens in it. I really love some of them and I’m not dwelling on the whole plot hole thing while I’m watching them, I’m not that much of a Scrooge. And I get that pretty much all movies have plot holes; it’s almost unavoidable. But the reason I get so annoyed with this one in particular is because all of these adults are so passionate about the No Santa issue. “It’s time you grow up and enter the real world Plucky Kid,” they say. “Santa is childish silliness and we don’t believe in him because we’re sensible adults!!” Are you really? Because you don’t seem to be at all phased by the fact that you wake up every Christmas morning to a whole batch of presents waiting for your kid that weren’t there the night before and that you didn’t buy or put under the tree. This is very conveniently never brought up or addressed at all. Well you can’t pull one over on me Christmas movies! I’m onto you!
I’m guessing that this is one of those plot holes that’s ignored because there’s no real way to reconcile it. These are family friendly holiday movies, usually made for children. They all have some kind of happy message at the end, so some stupid little detail shouldn’t (and really doesn’t) matter. I know that I should just fully suspend my disbelief and let it go, but I can’t. That’s the way pet peeves are I guess.
Maybe I should stay away from Santa-centric movies this year. My time would be better spent elsewhere, like throwing every single fruit flavored candy cane I can find into the garbage. Where they belong.
Is there anything about the holidays that probably bothers you more than it should? Or something about Christmas movies that you can’t stand? Would anyone care to join me in my war against fruity candy canes?
