So, that’s what you’ll be doing for the first six months of 2014. By the way, if you haven’t read those series yet, you can trust me that they are worth it. Get on it.
But maybe you’re one of those who can’t stand the anticipation. You remember the long long looooong wait for Mockingay and Allegiant and Clockwork Princess and Boundless and you just CANNOT.DO.IT.ANYMORE. For you, I have five recommendations. COMPLETE YA SERIES that you need to read if you haven’t already. Gift them to yourself for Christmas.
1. Hot Mobster Boy Narrator
The Curseworkers Series by Holly Black
Best thing about this series: Cassel. Let’s just all get on board with male, teenage protags and champion all of them forever. Cassel is great. He’s the only “normal” kid in a family of Curseworkers: people who can manipulate others with a simple touch who also happen to end up as criminals. Curseworking is a criminal activity so all of Cassel’s family are basically mobsters. But Cassel is the one whose past haunts him. The first book starts out with a great pace but lags. But don’t give up because Holly Black’s world building gets seriously genius in Red Glove, the second book. And in the third? Cassel becomes the hero you want to die for.
2. Totally Hot Fantasy Books
The Graceling Books by Kristin Cashore
These books are less of series and more like companion novels. Each book stands on its own, has its own protagonist but they all inhabit the same world and tromp in and out of each other’s books. It’s a fantasy world where those with two different colored eyes are graced with some special power. I wish I could tell you that I have a favorite between Po from Graceling and Brigan from Fire, but I cannot even begin to choose. If you are into hot YA romances with life and death stakes and super villains, this is for you.
3. Time Traveling Southerners
The Hourglass Series by Myra McEntire
When I say southerners, I mean Deep South Georgia peaches. This is not a bad thing. Hourglass has one of my favorite YA heroines ever, Emerson Cole, who sees ghosts of Southern gentry past. And the boy who enters her life to help her figure it all out: mmmmmm. Trips to Memphis (YAY) and Louisiana, mysteries that go beyond the paranormal, and future books with even hotter narrators round out this totally unique and awesome series.
4. Too Many Awesome Moments to Summarize
The Chaos Walking Series by Patrick Ness
Take a world where women have been eradicated by a disease that makes every man’s thoughts audible, add an adorable dog, an alien planet, a brave girl companion and an impending war … and if you aren’t confused you get the completely amazing Chaos Walking series. This is one you could enjoy yourself and then let your 13 year old nephew borrow. If I could outline all the amazing moments from this series, I would but it would ruin it for you. Just know that the 2nd book was one of my favorites last year, and the third BLEW MY MIND.
5. Zombies and Hot Guys
The Forest of Hands and Teeth books by Carrie Ryan
When I picked up the first book in this series, I felt like I was reading The Village with zombies. And while that might be an apt description, the series goes way beyond that simplicity and gives you love triangles, family drama, high stakes, and profound truths about life and death. Plus … Catcher. Ho boy.
So. There ya go. FIVE WHOLE SERIES you can sink your teeth into while we wait for the rest of our favorite series to finally get around to finishing up. And if you hate them, blame Rob.
