You might have forgotten, but we read three books in October for our Boozy Book Club … THREE! First up was Morning Glories, vol 1, then Just One Year and Allegiant. We won’t talk about the fact that it took us two extra weeks to get them all read for our chat, but still – we did it.
This month we had more live viewers than ever, but I’m sure some of you still missed it live. Good news is you can watch it here. We don’t disappoint with a super special guest (our friend and fellow contributor, Tiffany) really intellectual talk about character development, and theme and Four’s micropeen.
GET SOME
0:30 We raise a glass in honor of our victory over Google/YouTube being total tech-dicks.
1:36 Our real quick round of What Are We Drinking? in which we envy Nikki’s crazy straw.
4:00 We are joined by a special guest … eventually … but then we find out that she doesn’t drink so we kick her tee-totaling ass to the curb (KIDDING!)
6:04 Yes, we are STILL doing What Are We Drinking? in which we have pronunciation problems.
7:12 We kick off our book talk with Just One Year (and Just One Day) and come to the sad realization that we won’t be getting a Just One Decade or even Just One Love Scene, and Beth talks about meeting her first fake interviewee, Gayle Forman.
10:25 Our first reader question: At one point in Just One Year did you just HAVE to peek to see when Allyson appears?
12:20 We talk about how Just One Year is and isn’t basically The Midnight Sun of this series, and how YA authors are doing Midnight Suns all over the place.
15:35 2nd reader question: Did you pick up Just One Day and try to figure out where Willem and Allyson near-missed?? And Beth says for the 3rd time that THIS is her biggest issue with the book. She has a lot of “biggest issues” with the book.
21:29 We play our monthly round of Eff-Marry-Kill with our YA boyfriends from this month, Willem and Four, and our YA boyfriend of old … Edward Cullen. And everyone strangely agrees (except Beth, just to be contrary). #forever
23:53 We give the people what they REALLY are tuning in for: Morning Glories talk, which say what you will about graphic novels, was the only book we all liked this time around.
25:50 Our theories about what the hell is going on in this world range from alternate timeline/universe to “something to do with science.” We’re super sleuthy.
30:50 HUGE.FABULOUS.BREASTS!
31:59 OH, different artists. That’s why the cover art and the interior art looks totally and completely different. Duh, us.
36:10 It is time for the BIG CHAT, ie Allegiant and all of its suckage. We start that off with Nikki predicting what she thinks is going to happen.
39:10 Nikki’s not even done with the book, and she’s still got great insight: ie these voices don’t sound any different.
40:52 Bekah calls Veronica Roth a great writer 10x, but we still assert that she was just not capable of writing a third book in this series.
42:00 “Veronica, you need to go back and re-write that until you have something good to share with the group.” – her family
42:46 SPOILER ALERT: we aren’t upset about the “twist” … the end of the book is only part of the book that’s worth reading.
47:00 We have a huge DUH moment: we should have known what was going to happen as soon as we heard it was a dual POV.
48:00 We decide that we don’t even think Allegiant is worth reading. Like, just make the movie so we can see Theo.
49:42 We ask the important question: Is there a sex scene in this book? Um, if you have to ask.
53:44 Who’s out there writing their own Tris and Four fanfiction endings? No, really. Send it to us.
55:39 Beth figures out why sex between Four and Tris ruined the hotness of the rest of the book (Four’s little penis).
57:50 Silver lining!! The last couple of chapters were pretty well written. Thanks for being adept at ripping our hearts out.
1:00:00 OMG we’ve been talking for an hour, and we finally find out if anyone actually liked Allegiant.
1:04:00 Rating other dystopian trilogies against one another.
1:07:00 The deets on how our next month’s schedule will be a little different, and we announce our next book!!!
Our Nov/Dec Book Club Reads:
We’re doing Boozy Book Club a little different this month because of the holidays. We will meet mid-December to discuss our next book, and then we will pick a January book at the beginning of the year to discuss at the end of THAT month. Confused, yet?
So, our next book is Poison Princess by Kresley Cole. The official summary:
Sixteen-year-old Evangeline “Evie” Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future—and they’re still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.
But she can’t do either alone.
With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can’t totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?
Who can Evie trust?
As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it’s not always clear who is on which side.
Our optional book is Vicious by Victoria Schwab, so check that out if you are into super villains.
If you’re not already a member of our Goodreads group, get over there and jump in! We have discussions all month about the books we are reading, and we use YOUR thoughts about the books as jumping off points for our monthly discussion.
Thanks for watching!
