FYI: “The Hollow Crown” Airs Tonight

If you’re a fan of Shakespeare, or public television, or Tom Hiddleston, or English history, or more Tom Hiddleston, you probably already know about “The Hollow Crown.” It’s a mini-series based on four of William Shakespeare’s history plays airing on PBS. The first part, “Richard II” aired last Friday. And while it is sadly Hiddleston-less, it is fantastically done (Ben Whishaw won a BAFTA for his performance). You most definitely should watch it when you have time. The next part, “Henry IV, Part I” airs tonight 9/27 (check your local listings!). Jeremy Irons plays the king, and the lovely Tom plays his son Prince Hal. If you’re not a history geek like myself and need a bit of a crash course on what you might be getting yourself into story wise, just feast your eyes on the trailer:

Looks gripping, no? But let’s get to the real matter at hand! We love Tom Hiddleston around here. We flipped out when he ate cookies, we talked about the amazingness that a solo Loki movie would be, and we even delved deep into the heart of his fandom. “But Jamie,” you might be saying, “I love Tom as much as the next person, but Shakespeare isn’t really my thing. And neither is history. I don’t know if this is for me.” I get that, I really do, and I would love to give you a well thought out reason for why you should watch it. After I see it I’m sure I will be able to do so, but for now I’m going to be really superficial because my entire counterpoint is this:

So my friends, I will be spending tonight and the next two Fridays watching “The Hollow Crown” and I’ll be recapping each segment. Because the only thing better than watching Tom Hiddleston, is freaking out about the thing that you just watched Tom Hiddleston in. (You’ll be able to watch each episode online if you miss it when it first airs.) Refined fancyness awaits!
