Falling into a Fandom Part Two: The Divergent Fandom

in on 07/10/13 by Bekah 19 Comments

As I anticipate my first trip to Comic Con next week, I can’t help but get really excited for all things Divergent. If you remember your pop culture history correctly, Comic Con 2008 was really when Twilight hit the mainstream. Before SDCC ’08 Twilight had a big book following, many of whom were not so excited about Rob Pattinson being cast as Edward Cullen. But Comic Con thrust Twilight into the spotlight, introducing it to a whole new group of fans and kicked off the epic marketing going into the Fall release of the first film. That marketing really only completed last Fall. Let’s be honest, don’t you just think Summit is going to come up with something to keep the fandom going a little while longer? (IDEA: STEPHENIE MEYER SHOULD FINISH MIDNIGHT SUN).

Divergent, the little book series by Veronica Roth with its first film out next Spring and last book out this Fall, is also a Summit film. And so we can expect the exact same it-worked-before-why-won’t-it-again movie roll out, starting with the Hall H panel next Thursday. I think we’re camping out starting Saturday (no we’re not).

Anticipating Divergent got me thinking about the fandom & how little I know of it. The books are new to me- I just read them back in May. I know a whole lot about Theo James (obviously) but what of the fandom? Will it rival Twilight’s in intensity?

Inspired by Nikki’s “Falling into a Fandom Tom Hiddleston Style,” today I’m falling into a Fandom Divergent-style. Join me

The Divergent Fans

They call themselves “initiates” and they are P-A-S-S-I-O-N-A-T-E.

And imaginative:

Last night ET showed a quick “Behind the scenes” from Divergent filming & called it “The Next Hunger Games.” Tumblr blew up in a matter of seconds with amazing gifs (stay tuned for a potential Nikki/Bekah break down later today) from the video and a ton of comments like this:

Look out ET headquarters!

The Divergent fandom DEFINITELY seems young. It is a YA book, of course, but they seem even younger than late highschool (or I’m just REALLY old). While I know there are adult fans of Tobias Eaton & Divergent out there, I cannot find a “Divergent Moms” or “Moms for Divergent.” So I’m not sure what Oprah is going to do in a few years when she wants to interview crazy adult fans….

What’s the Gear like

It’s great. For Example: Because your outfit wouldn’t be complete without a Tobias Ring to show off your new mani

And have you been itching to join a Team ever since Twilight ended? You can:

Have we been 2nd-hand embarrassed by the Divergent Tattoos yet?

That’s a tough one. Because so many of the Dauntless are covered in kick-ass tattoos, much of what I’ve found is actually REALLY good.

I just got my first tattoo a few weeks ago, and now that I’m addicted (I am.) I’m trying to find a way I can make birds significant in my life because I love bird tattoos (just look at my Pinterest inspiration board).

And, well, Tris’ tattoo is kinda like some of the perfect tattoos I’ve seen on pinterest:

I guess it’s too early on in the fandom because I can’t seem to find anyone with a Tobias Eaton backpiece yet.

Is there any Divergent Fan art?

Yes. And some of it is pretty good

Not sure why they look so sad. Maybe they found out Veronica Roth isn’t going to make them bang in book 3?
And then some of the “art” is what you expect from any good fandom

Who were the cast hopefuls before Shailene Woodley and Theo James got the roles?

This was actually a thing that the fandom did, according to Divergent Wiki. The Fan-cast Tris Prior. The #1 fan pick was:

Ginny Gardner

Who is impossibly gorgeous.

Shailene Woodley actually turned up #8 on the Fan list. No big surprises from the rest of the list. They are all gorgeous skinny blondes. Well, Jennifer Lawrence (HA!) was the #11 pick and Taylor Swift (HA!) was #15.

The fans LOVED thinking about Max Irons as their Four, although he only shows up as #2 on this list.

My favorite pick is Rob Pattinson (#18) Can you imagine?

No where on the list does Theo James appear which leads me to ask….

Do the fans even like Theo James?

Some do not. Like this passionate fan:

Theo James is not four

or this passionate fan

Then there’s this fan:Theo James is not four

But have no fear. We like Theo James enough for the rest of the fandom

What about Fan fiction

Oh there’s fan fiction. I really did have to go to bed last night during my research otherwise I would have read a few to find out if any of the fan fiction is worth READING, but in my skimming I did find one story with this line:

I am panting, and I can feel desire pooling in my centre.

written by a teenager who has clearly never had a real sexual experience (but has read about many. “Member”,” “nub,” “entrance” were some of the descriptors used) and also needs to work on her spelling :/

If you feel like doing your own research, here is the Divergent page on FanFiction.net

I hope you enjoyed our trip into the Divergent fandom as much as I did. I am pleasantly surprised at the lack of 2nd-hand embarrassment I’ve found so far. But then again.. Comic Con is next week, and if we’ve learned anything from our experience the fun is JUST beginning!

What do you think? Have any fun Divergent fandom stories to share? Are YOU a part of a secret “Divergent moms” group I couldn’t find?
