That’s Normal Boozy Book Club Recap: The Spectacular Now

in on 07/30/13 by Bekah 3 Comments

Last week we had our second book club & discussed our book for July The Spectacular Now.  Book club on Goodreads is now up to 122 members which is pretty awesome! We’re glad some of you were able to join us LIVE during our Google Hangout & participate in the polls & chat on Twitter using the hashtag #TNBookclub. If you didn’t catch the chat live, you can watch it below or catch the breakdown below that. [Hi, I just had tequila. Did ANY of that just make sense?]

Fun Facts: SUPERMAN (Henry Cavill, on a stick) joins us a few times tonight; Bekah cosplayed as a cat; We were missing Nikki

That’s Normal Boozy Book club discusses The Spectacular Now

1:15 We kick it off with the most important question: WHAT ARE WE DRINKING? (Hint: it’s NOT 7 and 7s), and we learn that Bekah learned about a 7 and 7 from The OC and considers it a “trashy” drink because Ryan Atwood was from “Trashy” Chino, Ca.

7:04 Just so you know it took us only seven minutes until we went back to the Fever series, which then gave Bekah an excuse to real quick bring up Outlander.

7:38 We discuss: Does anyone actually drink as much as Sutter does in high school?

9:30 Is Sutter doing more harm than good to Aimee (specifically with drinking)?

11:20 Do we want to PARENT Sutter? Or Befriend him?

16:00 Beth thought Sutter reminded her of 1990s Christian Slater. Believe us, this is important. We come back to it…

18:35 We discuss our favorite girlfriend of Sutter’s

24:20 PLAYTIME It’s time for KFM (Kill, Fuck, Marry) with the following characters: Sutter Keely, Edward Cullen (non-virgin Edward Cullen) Simon Wolfgard from Written in Red

28:30 Just a real quick Henry Cavill KFM featuring: Charles Brandon from the Tudors, Bearded Clark Kent or Superman

32:35 Where is the worst place you ever passed out or woke up the next morning?

36:18 Would you have dated Sutter in high school?

37:20 Bekah confuses Christian Slater & Christian Bale and apparently this is a HUGE deal

38:40 Well, it’s time to talk about Bed of Roses and 40:10 Bekah does a little sing a long with the theme song Insensitive

41:10 We talk about the ending of this book well we get side-tracked a bit. And do more singing at 42:30 And we discuss what we THINK might happen after the book ends or how it ends in our mind.

47:50 FUN FACT: Val Kilmer IS in a movie where he’s blind. See. Bekah knew it.

53:31 Quick shout out to DavidjDecker on Twitter who is a big Christian Slater fan.

We Rate the Book

Overall we give The Spectacular Now

wine bottlewine bottlewine bottlewine bottle

4 Wine Bottles! Which means we recommend it! Plus you should see the movie in August!

Our picks for August Book Club

hex-hallThis August we’ll be reading Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins which she described as if you had magical powers, went to Hogwartz but it was AWFUL! Join the discussion over on Goodreads!

The real description is:

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It’s gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie’s estranged father–an elusive European warlock–only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it’s her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.

By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.

As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

Our optional, alternate book for August is Chocolates for Breakfast by Pamela Moore which is a re-issue from the 1950s! This book looks like a GREAT FIND thanks to Beth! Join the discussion here.
