Real quick story: Nikki came to visit Jamie & I in Philly last Fall. One rainy afternoon we sat in front of the TV (Doing what else? Watching Twilight of course) sipping a delicious drink featuring Sage- a gin-like liquor. It was Nikki’s first time and we easily drank the whole bottle during her visit, thus beginning our obsession with Sage & all things Art in the Age, the Philadelphia-based company that makes it.
And when I say “obsession,” I mean it. We respond to their tweets, we comment on most of their instagram pictures and we basically have done everything we can to be referred to as “Our #1 fans” in their marketing meetings. We’re not sure it’s worked, but we’ll keep trying.
We made the decision LONG ago to be drinking Sage and only Sage at Comic Con, and we’re so glad that Art in the Age made it possible (Because bringing it in my suitcase would have meant packing less shoes)
Here’s the thing about creating the That’s Normal Hotel Bar (see image below): It’s difficult without a kitchenette, working fridge or bar tools. Sage (and Rhubarb, a rhubarb-based spirit we also enjoyed!) is a specialty liquor that goes wonderfully with fancy ingredients & a trained mixologist. We did not have fancy tools, ingredients and are not mixologists, so our job was to use these great products & come up with practical, delicious hotel-appropriate drinks for ourselves & our guests who stopped by. I think we did it! Here is what we made:
THE TONY STARCH
1 Part Art in the Age Sage
3 Parts Club Soda
Muddled berries (we used strawberry & raspberry)
Simple Syrup (we used Royal Rose Lavender-Lemon Syrup)
Muddle the berries and place into your cup. Mix liquid ingredients together (pouring back and forth between two plastic cups over the hotel sink works well!). Fill cup with ice, pour ingredients over ice and berries. Yum!
The Beautiful Bastard
This is basically a gin & tonic but with Sage instead of gin. I have had Sage many different ways (made by a real mixologist and not in a hotel bathroom) and this simple drink has always been my favorite
1 Part Art in the Age Sage *or 2 parts, depending on what kind of day you’re having
3 Parts Tonic *diet tonic is okay by us!
Squeeze of Lime
Fill cup with Ice. Pour the Sage and Tonic into cup. Squeeze in lime. Stir. Garnish with Lime. Perfection!
Real Quick Rhubarb Drink
1 Part Art in the Age Rhubarb Tea
3 Parts Tonic
Muddled strawberries
Mint
Muddle strawberries & mint in the bottom of your glass. Mix Rhubarb Tea and Tonic. Fill cup with ice. Add liquids to berry mixture. Stir to combine. Add mint for garnish. Try not to die from deliciousness.
Thanks SO much to Art in the Age for providing us with these delicious spirits to keep the fun going at Comic Con. We had a blast coming up with creative-hotel drinks and naming them whatever worked for that day. Our friends and guests who stopped by loved the drinks, as well!
