I’ve come to terms with the fact that I have been suppressing my inner geekdom for years, maybe even decades. The last time a cartoon adorned one of my tees was an Animaniacs over-sized tee that I would wear to dance during my freshman year. I quickly realized that it was only cool to wear Absolute [Culture/Occupation] tee shirts or Co-Ed Naked naughtiness (what did my parents let me wear to High school?!?). That trend faded fast and so did my love of these types of clothes.
So why am I geeky t-shirt crazed now? Is it because I regularly see people letting their freak flag fly high about their nerdy (or Teen) obsessions? Whatever it is, it makes me want to buy every silly/funny/smart/cool tee shirt design for every and any cool/silly/fun/smart/geeky thing that I’ve been obsessing over. Especially now that I finally get the jokes (Like now I know what the Guild is – it’s something you should watch).
Cut to me a year after my first geeky shirt purchase and I’m totally addicted. I blame my BFF Marcie for introducing me to ShirtPunch.com and Teefury.com. This is the geeky shirt Mecca for pop culture/fandom tees for less than a imported beer in a Manhattan bar prices (for those who don’t speak Manhattan – that means for around $10!!!) Everyday is a new geeky pop culture shirt offering! Huzzah!
So if I miss some amazing Tee — my favorites tend to be the less obvious, stylized types — from ShirtPunch or Teefury, the next best place to check is Redbubble.com. Most of the shirts that make the daily deals eventually end up on that site. They pretty much have every fandom shirt your heart could every desire. Le sigh.
And since I’m a pusher, I want to see everyone else wearing the these tees so maybe I’ll be brave enough to stop stock piling them and wear them in public. I recognized a little kid’s “Keep Calm and Don’t Blink” t-shirt the other weekend in Philly and told him that I liked his Doctor Who T-shirt (he blushed), but I don’t think that kids count. I need other adults, who don’t look like the What Not To Wear before picture, to wear these T-shirts loud and proud. Otherwise, I have little Stacy and Clintons on my shoulders yelling at me for wearing “juvenile” printed tees.
I’ll take Two of Each, Please
When I think about my wardrobe for Comic Con, I want to represent all of my fandoms loves on each day (not sure Comic Con is long enough) but in a cool t-shirt that will get appreciative nods from fellow fandomers. Here are some of my favorites that I have yet to purchase.
Game of Thrones
Disney/GOT reference mash-up? YES. On first glance you think typical Disneyland tee, on second glance you know this person is cool.
To be honest, I’m not sure where these types of t-shirts got their start, but you can find them for every fandom. However, seeing them with our favorite Direwolves names? YES. This shirt is a Nikki favorite.
The Vampire Diaries
Sometimes you just have to show your love for those dramatic Mystic Falls teens or the badass Vamps that inhabit the town. This shirt is definitely Team Damon.
And sometimes the Tees are just really appropriate, especially for the #Stelena fans. Poor Stefan. Let’s blame Julie Plec.
All the Fandoms
To satisfy my little shipper heart, this T-shirt may be the most appropriate.
So many t-shirts, so little time (so little money in my wallet). Do you wear geeky pop culture shirts? What are some of your favorites? Where do you shop? Do they have it in my size?
