On Friday, Variety announced that MGM picked up the rights to Forman’s If I Stay and that Chloe Moretz is almost finalized to play Mia. The last time I’d gone internet trolling to find out the status of this movie, Summit owned the rights and Dakota Fanning was set to star. Apparently, Summit put the film in turnaround earlier this year, and MGM stepped in.
For those who haven’t read this book (and why you haven’t, I can’t imagine, because it’s fantastic), here’s a quick catch-up: seventeen-year-old Mia is Julliard bound. On a snowy day, her entire family gets into a horrific car accident. In that moment, Mia’s consciousness detaches, and she has a literal out-of-body experience while she watches the hospital staff and her friends talk about whether she’ll wake up from her coma. Mia knows what they do not: it isn’t up to them if she stays. It’s up to her.
I didn’t realize who Moretz was until I did some research. For a sixteen-year-old, she’s been in a LOT of movies. Most I haven’t seen, but finding out she played Rachel (JGL’s little sister) in 500 Days of Summer was enough to win her my vote to play Mia instead of Fanning. I also had some fun speculating over some of the information on her website, because her parents won’t let her buy designer clothes yet, but her dad’s a plastic surgeon in LA. (So, would he let her have a nose job but draws the line at Prada?)
Whether Moretz has had plastic surgery or not, I’m excited about this movie, and I’m excited to see her in it. As much as I like her as the new Mia, if she dropped out, too, I wouldn’t be completely heartbroken. I’m just hoping MGM and the producers end up making the movie this time. And I can’t wait to see who they cast as Adam.
So what about you? Do you prefer Fanning over Moretz? Not care about either so long as the guy who plays Adam is hot? Think you need to run out and buy/download this book? (You do!) Completely disagree with me and hate this story? Tell us what you think.
