I didn’t see the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night (as a die-hard Robstener, I was boycotting*), but I did see the Catching Fire teaser trailer as soon as it was put online. “Teaser” trailer is RIGHT: there were lots of clues to what the movie will look like, but there’s a whole lot of book left that we saw none percent of.
Didn’t keep me from ordering my kids back to bed while I watched it 7 times in a row last night though. Your turn.
So much to say!!!
Most of it’s about fashion and sets and that little glimpse of Rue’s poster in the square of District 11 (and is that Thresh’s grandmother?? MY HEART.)
We got lots of info from Snow and Plutarch’s Heavensbee’s little war conference. I loved the looks behind the scenes that we got in the first movie with Snow and Seneca. Something about how this convo flowed seemed like less of a smart addition and more like a plot dump. But whatever, I can’t wait to see more of Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
We got good glimpses of the riots, the pre-tour relationship drama in District 12, and the Victory Tour. My guess is that they want the trailers to not give away the events of the Quarter Quell to the non-book audience. I can understand that, but couldn’t they show the arena or something without spoiling WHO is going there?
Things I wish we’d seen:
- More Peeta. I don’t like he’s relegated to the secondary tier of characters, way below Snow and Haymitch. So much of what becomes important to Katniss and to the revolution is directly related to him. And what if we don’t see his accepting and rational but still really jealous reaction to all the Gale stuff? WHAT IF?
- Just a glimpse of the other victors. Just a few flashes of Betee or Mags or Johanna when Snow says, “the other victors … ” would’ve been AWESOME. (But not Finnick because we all know that won’t make anyone flock to the theaters.
I know that’s harsh, but it should have been you, Garrett.
Here are my highlights:
- Katniss’ and Peeta’s faces as the door slams on (or the guns fire from??) the District 12 peacekeepers. That gave me the hurts.
- Prim obviously coming into her role as a healer and revolutionary. You go, Little Duck.
- The GALE kiss. I am completely Team Peeta, but I think their chemistry there will be so great to watch.
- The whipping: I obviously hate this scene, but it looks just as it did in the books, and I think it was a perfect addition to the action of the trailer.
- Katniss’ Victory Tour Makeup
- Peeta as Victor > Peeta as Baker
*I think we all know this was sarcasm. I boycotted for Game of Thrones.
So, what did you think of the Catching Fire trailer? Is this your favorite book in the trilogy like it is mine? Do you want to just spoil the whole thing in the comment thread for anyone left who HASN’T read the books (me too)?
