Guys, I’m reaching a desperate moment. I’ve become obsessed with the CW’s latest creation, a cross between Nikita and Life Unexpected, but better than both of those shows. (Is Nikita still on? How does that happen and The Secret Circle get cancelled? Questions for another day.)
This new show that I’m in like-like with (it’s not quite love, I mean come on, it’s very early in our relationship) is Arrow. It has everything that I love in a television show. More on that below.
The Details behind Arrow
The series opens with billionaire playboy, Olivier Queen, being rescued off a small island in the Pacific after being missing for five years. We learn that he was ship-wrecked with the captain, his father, and his girlfriend’s sister (who he was coincidentally banging, whoops.) Everyone dies except Olivier, but not before Olivier’s father tells him about the evil going on back home in Starling City. Father Queen makes Olivier promise to right his wrongs and protect the city (du-nuh-nuh-nuh BATMAN).
Flash forward to Olivier coming home ready to kick some bad guy ass. (I would just want a cheeseburger.) Of course Olivier has to keep this secret from his family, so he creates the alter ego of “the Hood”. (Get that Robin Hood reference guys? Get it?) So by day he is the billionaire playboy and by night robbing the evil rich and protecting the poor! All of this to be complicated by the fact that he is still in love with his ex-girlfriend, who he cheated on and basically killed her sister. Uh oh.
Enough about that, on to The reasons I love Arrow.
Hot Guys.
I’m sorry, Stephen Amell- where have you been all my life??? (Besides as your brief stint as eye candy that got beat down on Greys Anatomy.) Although Stephen recently got married, breaking my fragile heart, we will always have Arrow, where I will get to gaze longingly at his chiseled face and 12 pack abs. Is a 12 pack possible, you ask? Why yes, yes it is. And it has recently come to my attention that Colton Haynes of Teen Wolf fame has joined the cast. Now, I have not watched Teen Wolf but I do follow Colton on Instagram and from what I have gathered in all of my snooping he is an adorable, sweet-hearted hottie!
It’s a procedural.
I love a good procedural. Law & Order:SVU, NCIS, Criminal Minds- you’re speaking my language. I will spend an entire weekend having been sucked in by a sex trafficking ring Benson and Stabler are trying to crack. Arrow has elements of this because Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell, the super hottie) is trying to right the wrongs of his dead father and save the city from corruption and evil. It’s like ninja Law & Order with hot guys and love stories! Each week another bad guy bites the dust, and I love that.
My friends are bad guys on the show.
Okay, this is a selfish reason, but one of the bad guys, excuse me, bad girls, is played by my ridiculously talented friend, Kelly Hu. And a drug dealing, creepy psychopath, weirdo, is played by the twistedly talented, Seth Gabel. (I know, I’m basically famous guys, no autographs please.) These are just two of the really great performances on the show, well really great performances minus one multi-episode guest start who will remain nameless. In a show that has such ridiculous story lines the acting is grounded in truth and vulnerability which are what really hook you and make you super invested in the character’s journeys. I’m just saying, good acting on a soapy drama, super rare, Arrow, you win!
Archery is so hot right now.
Have you read Hunger Games? Have you seen how badass Jennifer Lawrence looks when she nails that apple to wall? No one will argue that archery is the new it sport/martial art/battle form. In Arrow, Oliver Queen (I like saying his full name, it even sounds hot.) is an expert archer. Yes folks, even better than Katniss. He learned to be an expert archer when he was ship-wrecked on that island for five years, don’t ask me how. Maybe monkeys taught him? The writers are revealing Olivier’s “island time” little by little.
Unrequited romance.
I’m not gonna lie, I’m a sucker for a good ole unrequited romance. I’ve had far too many in my own life, and even though I’ve put those behind me, I still relish in a little (or a lot) of on screen pining and brooding. As I mentioned earlier, Olivier pretty much takes the cake as an awful boyfriend. I mean sleeping with and then killing your sister? That’s rough, honey. While his ex-girlfriend Laurel, played brilliantly by Katie Cassidy, struggles to forgive Olivier, she and “the Hood” become friendly while solving crime together. Can Laurel ever forgive Olivier? Will she see that he has changed his ways? Will they ever be together? It’s too much for my little heart to handle!
So PLEASE join me on my ARROW adventure and then dissect every detail with me on the comments below. Thanks!
