What We Know:
Legendary and Plan B to Produce
Plan B brought us Moonlight, 12 Years a Slave, and they’re bringing TN fave Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell to the screen as well. And Legendary is well… legendary (come on we had to!!) for BIG movies like Kong and Godzilla, along with TV like Lost in Space and the upcoming sci-fi classic, Dune! So it’s safe to say, they’re experience in the realm of sci-fi, space invaders, and teen girls!
Stephany Folsom who most recently wrote Toy Story 4, a couple episodes of Star Wars Resistance and is producing the new Lord of the Rings series (also on Amazon) will adapt the story for the screen. That’s a nice resume and can we just applaud the choice of a female voice to write… female voices!?! Can we make this more common, please! I do love the story but I have talked at length with my boyfriend, about how it feels like a missed opportunity that Brian and Cliff did not bring in a woman on a co-write. It’s 2019, let’s lift women up, especially when we’re telling stories about women.
The Story
For those who haven’t read Paper Girls… first of all: YOU SHOULD!
Second, here’s a synopsis:
The series follows four young girls who, while out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween in 1988, become unwittingly caught in a conflict between warring factions of time-travelers, sending them on an adventure through time that will save the world. As they travel between our present, the past, and the future — they encounter future versions of themselves and now must choose to embrace or reject their fate. An emotional adventure in which the girls and the women they eventually become are tough, their friendships are authentic, and their journey through time is epic.
Paper Girls Dream Cast
Ok, so I’m not up on the teen girl actress genre but I’m gonna give it a whirl…
Erin Tieng
Erin is our protagonist and heart of the story, as the new gal in Stony Stream, Erin needs to be played by someone with a lot of innocence and later… well an adult who’s a bit world-weary. An awesome adult Erin might be Akwafina for a bit of a sarcastic take, or Kelly Marie Tran aka Rose from Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the sweet, girl next door vibe of Erin.
Mackenzie “Mac” Coyle
Mac is the tough talking, teenage smoking, badass chick of the story and one of my faves! Though it might seem like she’s gone it before, Sadie Sink of Stranger Things feels like her Max character but kicked up a few notches. She’s even got the red hair, all she needs is a teenage smoking problem.
Tiffany Quilkin
If Zendaya was like 4 years younger, she’d be the perfect Tiffany.
Karina KJ J
Kaitlyn Dever from Booksmart please! Sweet yet feisty, can deliver a good one-liner and still be a believable high schooler. Yup, we need Kaitlyn.
Grandfather / Japho
Clearly this is a dream cast, so I’m shooting for the stars when I say Jeff Bridges would make the perfect Grandfather. His “The Dude” from The Big Lebowski is pretty much who Grandfather has to be based on. Tell me I’m wrong, Brian and Cliff!!
.
The only other thing I REALLY need to see in this adaptation of Paper Girls is the coloring. The colors from the covers and a lot of the Paper Girls art are beautiful and set it apart from other series. We better see some of the lush neon looks in the show and a kick ass title sequence please!
Stay tuned for more and drop your dream casting for Paper Girls in the comments! Someone please share a good young Erin option!
