Review: One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake

in Book Reviews on 09/18/17 by Brooke Leave a Comment

It’s finally fall around my house and you know what goes perfect with changing fall leaves? Battling witches in their quest to be queen. (Oh, were you going to say caramel apple spice? Yeah I love that too.) If you love Kendare Blake as much as we do or if you read my review of Three Dark Crowns, then you know One Dark Throne releases tomorrow, September 19th. It’s a low magic miracle. Or it’s that time of year when all the best books emerge.

Either way, I’m happy. I’d say this would make an epic Christmas gift but whom am I kidding, if you read Three Dark Crowns then there will be no waiting. Waiting would be book torture of the cruelest kind because One Dark Throne serves up more twists, more intrigue, and mad vicious witch fights.

One Dark Throne goes down smooth and doesn’t disappoint. The book picks up right after Three Dark Crowns and these sisters are bent.

Bent on revenge, Katherine is full savage and rightfully so. She’s manic with revenge against her sisters and Pietyr. The Breccia Domain messed with this poor girl’s head. Seriously, this girl makes Bellatrix Lestrange seem like she bakes cookies for her neighbors.

Bent on reconciliation, Mira just wants her sisters to stop fighting. Too bad the others don’t feel this way. No longer favored and definitely down on her luck, you really feel bad for her in One Dark Throne. She’s a lover, but unfortunately she has to fight to stay alive.

Bent on escape, Arsinoe wouldn’t be Arsinoe if the island didn’t kick her flat on her face a few times. Her new budding power creates a host of problems. And while she has the best odds of winning and the island behind her, she just wants out of the competition and off the island.

Why I love One Dark Throne as Much as the First Book

I still love all the sisters. Even though Katherine is coo coo cocoa puffs, you don’t blame her and I found myself looking forward to all her crazy. Despite everyone being out to get her, Mira stays true to herself—holding onto hope when there is none. And then Arsinoe is Arsinoe; the girl has nine lives, a bear and a guy who loves her.

The twists shock and awe. It wouldn’t be Kendare Blake if there weren’t wicked twists. I’m still processing the end. What does it all mean? But she can’t, but she did. Ahhhhh. I super love it.

(We need to take a moment to appreciate how un-Thor-ly Hemsworth is in this clip. Am I the only one giggling at its stupidity? How is this shocking surprise?)

One Dark Throne dishes out death. I’m not a morbid person but when I’m caught up in a witch fight, I like a little blood on the page. This book is definitely darker (but not too dark that I wouldn’t let my daughter read it) and loads of people die. Some you know, some you don’t.
