Over the weekend, Disney held it’s bi-annual D23 Expo, which for the layman is essentially Comic Con for Disney fans. And it’s… AWESOME. This year especially had amazing moments thanks to the impending release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the AH-MAzzZZZing Parks and Resorts news. Yes, I am that kind of nerd.
I’ve gathered all the best news, images from the panels and my own pictures from the exhibit hall to give you an all in one inclusive D23 Expo Round Up! Saddle up partners!
Beyond upcoming movies Zootopia, Gigantic (a Jack and the bean stalk themed movie), The Good Dinosaur and Moana the BIG BIG news was that Disney is making both a Incredibles 2, a Toy Story 4 AND Finding Dory!
Disney Studios, Marvel and Lucasfilm have a full to bursting slate for the next few years. Let’s take a look at the combined animation and live action movie timeline:
Of course there’s the obvious excitement about the new Star Wars sequels but the live action versions of classic animation films is what sticks out to me. We have The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon plus Beauty and the Beast on the horizon.
Oh and let’s not forget Marvel’s Doctor Strange with a one, Mr Benedict Cumberbatch coming to the big screen October 26, 2016. YASSS.
They also trotted out Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie to share never before seen footage from Captain America: Civil War which I’m sure you can see online somewhere now…
Clearly telling some sort of fantastic two-man joke here…
So, movie new is great and all but let’s kick up our nerd levels a few notches here. If I’m honest the Disney Parks and Resorts panel is quite possibly the most exciting news to me! STOP JUDGING! Being an Annual Passholder and a bit of a dork, I follow all kinds of Disneyland sites and dig into all the gossip and rumor pieces any time Disney buys land in Anaheim, including this most recent and telling post. Besides wishing I owned a little motel around Disneyland that I could sell for a cool 32 million, Bob Iger confirmed at the D23 Expo that Disneyland and World would be getting the much rumored… WAIT FOR IT… DRUM ROLL PLEASE… STAR WARS LAND!!!! The first and only completely movie themed land at any Park! 14 acres of themed real estate including two new rides, shows and more! Yoda’s Chocolate Parfait with a side of Luke and Leia double cheeseburger under the shadow of the Mos Eisley Cantina anyone?
Concept Art for the new Star Wars Land at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World:
“The Walt Disney Company Bob Iger for plans to bring Star Wars-themed lands to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando and Disneyland park in Anaheim. Each 14-acre land will transport guests to a never-before-seen planet with two signature attractions, including a customized secret mission on the Millennium Falcon and an epic Star Wars adventure that puts guests in the middle of a climactic battle.”
Those lucky dogs at Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios will be getting an all new Toy Story Land which will feature two new rides plus one “re-imagined” favorite at the overhaul of the Hollywood Studios.
Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando will open the already under construction Pandora – The World of Avatar which will feature new experiences, attractions and transform the park at night… you know when all the animals are sleeping.
And in a move that is about as rumored and long over due as Star Wars land, Hong Kong Disneyland will house the first Marvel attraction at any park called the Iron Man Experience, “taking guests on an epic adventure over the streets and in the sky above Hong Kong. The adventure will begin at the new Stark Expo where guests board the Iron Wing to take flight and battle Hydra alongside fan-favorite Avenger, Iron Man.”
This Jungle Cruise costume was bananas from the cruise boat driver telling crazy stories on the mic to the fake scared tourist, Disney costumers are THE BEST.
D23 had everything to kick off the next two years perfectly! If you’re not a member of D23 the Disney fan club, you should join! And if you’re a big ‘ol Disney fan like me, you should hit up D23 next time it’s in Anaheim in two years! See you then… or I’ll probably see you at the Parks and in the Theater before then!
